25 Seeds
🌱 Best Sowing Time
- Gulf: October–February.
- Kuwait: November–January is the preferred period.
- A second suitable window is February, provided temperatures are still moderate.
- Avoid starting seeds during the extreme summer heat.
- Ideal germination temperature: approximately 20–25°C.
🌿 How to Sow the Seeds
- Use a light, sterile, well-drained seed-starting mix.
- Moisten the medium before sowing.
- Sow the seeds approximately 0.3–0.5 cm deep.
- Cover lightly with fine soil or vermiculite.
- Water gently with a fine spray.
- Keep the medium consistently slightly moist, but never waterlogged.
- Place the seed tray in a warm, bright location with good airflow.
- Germination usually takes around 1–3 weeks, although some seeds may take longer.
- Once seedlings emerge, provide strong light to prevent weak, stretched growth.
🌱 Seedling Care & Transplanting
- Thin seedlings if several emerge in the same cell.
- Transplant when seedlings have developed several true leaves and a good root system.
- Harden seedlings gradually before planting outdoors.
- Space plants approximately 1–1.5 m apart for a hedge or individual shrubs.
- Provide more space if you want plants to develop into larger bushes.
- A container at least 30–40 cm wide and deep is suitable for a young plant.
☀️ Growing & Care
- Sunlight: Full sun is ideal.
- In the Gulf, young plants may benefit from light afternoon shade during periods of extreme heat.
- Mature Goji plants generally tolerate strong sunlight well.
- Soil: Sandy, loamy, alkaline to neutral, and very well drained.
- Goji tolerates relatively poor soils once established.
- Water: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, allow the soil to dry somewhat between watering.
- Avoid constantly wet soil.
- Reduce irrigation during cooler periods.
- Apply a balanced fertilizer lightly during active growth.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen because it can encourage excessive vegetative growth.
- Prune to maintain a manageable shape and encourage productive branches.
- Provide support if branches become long or heavily loaded with fruit.
🫐 Fruiting
- Seed-grown Goji plants can take approximately 2–4 years to begin producing meaningful quantities of fruit, sometimes longer.
- Fruit production varies considerably between seed-grown plants.
- Berries develop after flowering and should be allowed to mature fully before harvesting.
- Important: Plants grown from seed may not necessarily reproduce all the characteristics of the parent ‘Big Black’ plant.
🌡 Gulf Climate Tips
- In Kuwait, November–January is a good period to start seeds indoors or in a protected area.
- Move young plants outdoors gradually as temperatures become suitable.
- Protect young plants from intense afternoon sun during their first hot season.
- Approximately 30–40% afternoon shade can be useful during extreme heat.
- Once established, Goji is relatively tolerant of heat and drought.
- Protect plants from hot, drying winds while young.
- Use containers or raised beds if the native soil drains poorly.
- During extreme summer heat, deep morning watering is preferable to frequent shallow irrigation.
- Avoid allowing containers to become excessively hot.
Tip: Goji is considerably more heat tolerant than many temperate fruit plants, making it a promising choice for the Gulf. For faster and more predictable fruiting, propagation from a healthy cutting is generally preferable to growing from seed, especially when you want to preserve the exact characteristics of ‘Big Black’.
