How to Seed Golden-Crown Coreopsis (Coreopsis basalis)
-
Sowing Time:
Sow directly outdoors from March to May, or in autumn (September–October) for early blooms the following spring. You can also start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost for an earlier flowering season. -
Sowing Depth:
Sow seeds on the soil surface and press lightly — do not cover, as light is needed for germination. -
Soil:
Prefers well-drained, sandy or loamy soil. Avoid rich or heavily fertilized soil, as too much nutrition encourages leaves instead of flowers. Coreopsis grows best in poor to moderately fertile soil. -
Light & Temperature:
Choose a sunny position. Ideal temperature for germination is 18–22 °C (65–72 °F). -
Germination Time:
Seeds usually germinate within 7–14 days under warm, bright conditions. -
Thinning / Transplanting:
When seedlings are about 5–7 cm tall, thin or transplant them 25–30 cm apart to allow enough room for full growth. -
Growing Tips:
-
Water regularly until established, then sparingly — Coreopsis is drought-tolerant once mature.
-
Deadhead (remove faded flowers) to encourage continuous blooming.
-
The Golden-Crown Coreopsis produces vibrant golden-yellow flowers with dark centers, perfect for borders, wildflower gardens, and cut arrangements.
-
Blooms throughout summer and early autumn, attracting butterflies and pollinators.
