Greek Oregano

Greek Oregano is a hardy Mediterranean herb that prefers plenty of sunlight, excellent drainage, and relatively dry conditions once established. In the Gulf, it is best started during the cooler months and protected from extreme summer heat.

🌱 Best Growing Season

• Best sowing time: October–December.
• In milder Gulf areas, sowing can also be done during January–February.
• Avoid: Peak summer, especially June–August.
• Ideal germination temperature: 18–24°C.

🌿 Seed Sowing

1. Choose a sunny location with very well-drained soil.
2. Sow seeds in seed trays, small pots, raised beds, or directly in the garden.
3. Scatter the small seeds on the soil surface.
4. Press them gently into the soil or cover with only a very thin layer of fine soil.
5. Do not bury the seeds deeply.
6. Once established, space plants approximately 25–30 cm apart.
7. Water gently with a fine spray to avoid disturbing the seeds.
8. Keep the soil lightly moist until germination.

⏱ Germination

• Seeds generally germinate within 7–21 days under suitable conditions.
• Keep the growing medium lightly moist, but avoid excessive watering.
• Provide good light and airflow after seedlings emerge.
• Thin seedlings when they become large enough to handle.

🌱 Growing & Care

• Sunlight: Full sun, ideally 6–8 hours daily.
• Soil: Light, sandy or loamy, and very well drained.
• Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once mature, Greek Oregano is relatively drought tolerant.
• Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
• Fertilizing: Add a small amount of compost before planting. Excessive fertilization is unnecessary.
• Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can produce soft growth and reduce the intensity of the oregano's aroma.
• Good airflow is particularly important in humid coastal Gulf areas.

🌿 Harvest

• Begin harvesting once plants are well established and have developed plenty of leafy growth.
• Cut young stems and leaves as needed.
• Harvest just before or as the plant begins flowering for strong flavor and aroma.
• Avoid removing more than about one-third of the plant at one time.
• Regular trimming encourages bushier growth.

🌡 Gulf Climate Tips

• In Kuwait and other very hot Gulf regions, November–January is particularly suitable.
• Provide afternoon shade during periods of extreme heat.
• Use gravel or a light mulch layer around plants to improve drainage and reduce evaporation.
• Drip irrigation is recommended, but avoid keeping the soil constantly wet.
• Water early in the morning.
• Protect young seedlings from hot, dry winds.
• During peak summer, container-grown oregano can be moved to a location with morning sun and afternoon shade.
