Green Cauliflower ‘Verde di Macerata’ is a traditional Italian cauliflower variety known for its attractive light-green heads, vigorous growth, and fine texture. The heads can become large and firm, with some sources reporting approximately 1–1.6 kg under good growing conditions. The variety retains much of its green color when cooked.
It is a cool-season crop and performs best when temperatures remain moderate. In the Gulf, successful timing is particularly important because excessive heat can interfere with cauliflower head formation.
🌱 Best Planting Time
- Gulf region: September–April
- Kuwait: September–November and February–March
- Best period in Kuwait: October–November
- In warmer Gulf areas, autumn and late winter are generally preferable.
- Avoid starting young plants during the peak summer heat.
🌿 How to Plant the Seeds
- Start seeds in trays, small pots, or seedling cells for better control of temperature and moisture.
- Use a loose, fertile, well-draining seed-starting mix.
- Sow seeds approximately 0.5–1 cm deep.
- Cover lightly with fine growing medium.
- Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged.
- Place the tray in a bright location with good ventilation.
- When seedlings develop several true leaves and are well established, gradually harden them before transplanting.
🌡️ Germination
- Ideal temperature: approximately 15–20°C
- Germination: usually about 5–15 days
- Keep seedlings slightly cooler and well lit after emergence to encourage compact, strong growth.
🌱 Transplanting
Transplant when seedlings are strong and have several true leaves.
- Plant spacing: 45–60 cm
- Row spacing: approximately 50–75 cm
- Do not bury the stem excessively.
- Water immediately after transplanting.
- Harden seedlings gradually before exposing them to strong Gulf sunlight.
☀️ Sunlight
- Full sun is preferred.
- Aim for around 6 hours or more of good sunlight during the cooler season.
- In the Gulf, morning sun with some protection from intense afternoon heat can help young plants.
- Avoid placing plants where hot walls or paving reflect excessive heat.
💧 Watering
Cauliflower needs consistent moisture, especially while the head is developing.
- Keep the soil evenly moist.
- Water deeply when necessary rather than allowing repeated severe drying.
- Avoid waterlogging.
- Mulching around the plants can help maintain soil moisture and moderate root-zone temperature.
- Sudden changes between very dry and very wet conditions can reduce head quality.
🌱 Soil
Use deep, fertile, humus-rich and well-drained soil.
- Add mature compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
- A fertile loam or sandy-loam soil is suitable when drainage is good.
- Avoid compacted soil.
- Cauliflower is a relatively heavy feeder, so good soil fertility is important.
🌿 Fertilizing
- Incorporate compost before planting.
- Feed moderately with a balanced vegetable fertilizer during active growth.
- Maintain good nutrition while the plant is developing its head.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage excessive leaf growth at the expense of good head development.
🥦 Head Development & Harvest
‘Verde di Macerata’ can produce large, firm, light-green cauliflower heads. Depending on growing conditions and the seed source, maturity may range from roughly 60–90 days, while some seed catalogues list a longer period for their particular strain.
When the head becomes firm and well developed, harvest before the florets begin to loosen.
As the head develops, the large outer leaves can naturally provide some protection. If necessary, gently bring a few leaves over the developing head to help protect its color and quality.
🪴 Growing in Containers
This variety can be grown in large containers.
- Use a deep container with excellent drainage.
- Allow approximately 45–60 cm of space per plant.
- Use rich potting mix combined with compost and a drainage material such as perlite or pumice.
- Containers are useful in Kuwait because they can be moved to a cooler or partially shaded position during unusually warm weather.
🐛 Common Pests
Watch for common cabbage-family pests such as:
- Cabbage white butterfly caterpillars
- Cabbage root flies
- Aphids
- Other caterpillars
Fine-mesh insect netting can provide useful protection without relying immediately on chemical treatments.
🔥 Gulf Climate Tips
- Grow during the cooler months, rather than the hottest part of summer.
- In Kuwait, October–November is a particularly useful planting window.
- A second crop can be started around February–March if temperatures remain suitable.
- Protect young seedlings from strong afternoon heat.
- Keep soil moisture consistent during head formation.
- Good soil fertility and regular watering are especially important for producing large heads.
- Good airflow helps reduce problems caused by excessive humidity.
- Containers or raised beds can make temperature and drainage management easier.
🌱 Growing Tip: For the Gulf, sow Green Cauliflower ‘Verde di Macerata’ during the cooler season and aim to have the plants form their heads while temperatures are moderate. Consistent moisture, rich soil, and protection from extreme afternoon heat are key to producing good-quality green cauliflower.
