5 Bulbs
Greigii ‘Peacock’ Mixed Tulips are attractive botanical tulips originating from the Tulipa greigii group. They are relatively compact, producing large, brightly colored bowl-shaped flowers on short, sturdy stems. Their broad grey-green leaves are often beautifully marked or mottled with purple or maroon, adding decorative interest even before flowering.
The mix can include several vibrant colors such as yellow, orange, red, apricot and bi-color combinations. Greigii tulips are particularly suitable for containers, borders, rock gardens and smaller planting spaces because of their compact growth.
Like other tulips, they require a period of cold treatment to flower properly. This is especially important in the warm Gulf climate, where natural winter temperatures may not provide enough chilling. Pre-chilling the bulbs is therefore strongly recommended.
🌱 Best Planting Time
- Gulf region: October–January
- Kuwait: Best around November–December
- Plant after the intense summer heat has declined.
- Pre-chill the bulbs for at least 8 weeks before planting; 8–14 weeks is commonly recommended for tulips in warm-winter climates.
- If possible, plant the chilled bulbs soon after the chilling period.
🌿 How to Plant the Bulbs
- Choose firm, healthy bulbs without mold or soft spots.
- Plant with the pointed end facing upward.
- Plant approximately 10–12 cm deep. Some Greigii bulb suppliers recommend around 10 cm, while other guidance uses 10–15 cm depending on bulb size.
- Space bulbs approximately 10–15 cm apart.
- Plant in groups for a fuller, more colorful display.
- Cover gently with loose, well-drained soil.
- Water thoroughly after planting.
- Make sure excess water drains away quickly.
🪴 Growing in Containers
Greigii ‘Peacock’ Mixed Tulips are particularly well suited to container growing.
- Use a deep container with good drainage holes.
- Use loose, fertile and well-drained potting soil.
- A mixture of potting soil, compost and perlite, pumice or coarse grit works well.
- Plant several bulbs together for a colorful display.
- Keep containers in a bright location.
- During warmer Gulf weather, move containers away from intense afternoon heat when necessary.
☀️ Sunlight
Greigii tulips prefer full sun, although light partial shade can also be tolerated.
For Gulf conditions, provide good morning sunlight and some protection from strong afternoon heat, particularly as temperatures rise.
💧 Watering
- Water thoroughly after planting.
- Keep the soil lightly and evenly moist while roots and shoots are developing.
- Do not allow the soil to remain constantly wet.
- Water when the upper layer of soil begins to dry during active growth.
- Reduce watering after flowering as the foliage starts to yellow.
- Avoid excessive summer watering during dormancy.
🌱 Soil
Use fertile, loose and very well-drained soil.
A suitable container mix can include:
- Quality potting soil
- Well-rotted compost
- Perlite, pumice or coarse grit
Good drainage is particularly important for tulips because excessive moisture can encourage bulb rot. RHS specifically recommends fertile, well-drained soil and protection from excessive wet conditions.
🌿 Fertilizing
Apply a light balanced bulb fertilizer when active growth begins. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage excessive foliage rather than strong flowers.
🌸 Flowering
Greigii tulips are early spring-flowering tulips. Depending on the specific varieties in the Peacock mix and the growing conditions, flowering may occur from late winter into spring. The flowers are generally large compared with the compact height of the plants.
The combination of colorful flowers and patterned foliage makes this mix especially attractive in groups.
🌿 After Flowering
- Remove faded flowers after flowering.
- Do not cut the green leaves immediately.
- Allow the foliage to naturally yellow and dry.
- Once completely dry, remove the foliage.
- In suitable climates, Greigii tulips can remain in the ground and may naturalize for several years.
- In the hot Gulf climate, however, lifting and storing the bulbs after the foliage has completely died can make summer management easier.
- Store bulbs in a dry, cool, well-ventilated place until the next planting season.
🔥 Gulf Climate Tips
- Pre-chilling is strongly recommended for reliable flowering in Kuwait and other warm Gulf areas.
- Keep bulbs away from ripening fruit during chilling because ethylene gas can damage the flower inside the bulb.
- Plant during the cooler months rather than summer.
- Morning sun with protection from intense afternoon heat is ideal.
- Excellent drainage is essential.
- Avoid excessive watering during the hot summer dormant period.
- Container growing is particularly useful because the plants can be moved when temperatures become too high.
- Protect the relatively short stems and flowers from strong winds.
🌱 Growing Tip: Greigii ‘Peacock’ is a good choice when you want a colorful tulip display without very tall plants. In Kuwait and other hot Gulf areas, pre-chill the bulbs before planting and consider growing them in containers so you can better control heat, drainage and sunlight.
