Hokkaido Pumpkin, also known as Red Kuri Squash or Japanese Hokkaido Squash, produces small to medium bright orange-red fruits with sweet, nutty flesh. The thin skin becomes tender when cooked, so it usually does not need peeling. It is excellent for soups, roasting, baking, steaming, curries, and purées. In the Gulf region, it performs best during the cool growing season.

Best Planting Time

  • September to November (recommended)
  • A second planting is possible from January to February in cooler Gulf areas.
  • Avoid planting during late spring and summer because high temperatures reduce flowering and fruit set.

Seed Preparation

  • No soaking is required.
  • Optional: Soak seeds in lukewarm water for 4–6 hours before sowing to speed up germination.
  • Use fresh, high-quality seeds.

Soil Preparation

Pumpkins grow best in fertile, loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.

Recommended mix:

  • 40% Sandy loam soil
  • 30% Well-rotted compost or manure
  • 20% Coco peat
  • 10% Perlite

Ideal soil pH:

  • 6.0–7.2

Sowing Method

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden whenever possible.
  • Plant 2–3 seeds per hole, 2.5–3 cm deep.
  • Thin to the strongest seedling after germination.
  • If starting indoors, transplant carefully before roots become crowded.

Temperature & Light

  • Ideal germination temperature: 22–30°C
  • Ideal growing temperature: 20–30°C
  • Requires 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • Provide light afternoon shade if temperatures exceed 35°C.

Watering

  • Keep soil evenly moist during germination.
  • Water deeply when the top 3–5 cm of soil becomes dry.
  • Reduce watering slightly as fruits mature.
  • Avoid wetting the leaves to reduce fungal diseases.

Germination Time

  • 5–10 days

Plant Spacing

  • 90–120 cm between plants.
  • 180–250 cm between rows.

Harvest

  • Harvest approximately 90–110 days after sowing.
  • Fruits are ready when:
    • The rind becomes hard.
    • The skin develops a deep orange-red color.
    • The stem turns brown and dry.
  • Cure pumpkins in a shaded, dry, well-ventilated area for 7–10 days before storage.
  • Properly cured fruits can store for several months.

Fertilization

  • Mix compost into the soil before planting.
  • Feed every 2–3 weeks with a balanced vegetable fertilizer.
  • Increase potassium during flowering and fruit development.
  • Avoid excessive nitrogen after flowering.

Gulf Climate Tips

  • Grow only during the cooler months.
  • Apply mulch to conserve moisture and keep roots cool.
  • Water early in the morning.
  • Bees are essential for pollination; hand-pollinate if necessary.
  • Monitor for aphids, whiteflies, spider mites, squash vine borers (where present), powdery mildew, and downy mildew.
  • Allow fruits to mature fully on the vine for maximum sweetness and storage life.
