How to Seed Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum)

  1. Sowing Time:
Sow indoors from February to May, or directly outdoors in late spring to early summer once the soil has warmed (above 15 °C / 59 °F). In warm climates, it can also be grown year-round.

  2. Sowing Depth:
Sow seeds on the surface of moist soil and press lightly — do not cover, as light aids germination.

  3. Soil:
Use well-drained, fertile soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Holy Basil thrives in loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.5).

  4. Light & Temperature:
Place in a sunny, warm spot. Holy Basil requires at least 6–8 hours of sunlight daily. Ideal temperature for germination is 20–25 °C (68–77 °F).

  5. Germination Time:
Seeds usually germinate in 7–14 days under warm and bright conditions.

  6. Transplanting:
When seedlings are about 10–15 cm tall and have several true leaves, transplant them into larger pots or outdoors, spacing 25–30 cm apart.

  7. Growing Tips:

    • Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy.

    • Pinch off the growing tips when plants reach about 15 cm tall to encourage bushier growth.

    • Harvest leaves regularly to promote new growth and stronger aroma.

    • Holy Basil is excellent for teas, natural remedies, and cooking, valued for its spiritual and medicinal properties.
