Knowlians Black Night Morning Glory is a warm-season morning glory that can perform well in the Gulf when started during the milder months. Its very dark flowers are especially attractive against green foliage, fences, trellises, and pergolas.

🌱 Best Sowing Time

  • Gulf: September–April.
  • Kuwait: October–November is an excellent sowing period.
  • A second suitable window is February–March.
  • December–January is possible in a warm, protected location.
  • Avoid outdoor sowing during June–August because of extreme heat.
  • Ideal germination temperature: approximately 20–25°C.

🌿 Seed Preparation

Morning glory seeds have a hard outer seed coat. Light scarification can improve germination.

  1. Gently scratch or nick a small area of the seed coat using fine sandpaper or a nail file.
  2. Avoid cutting deeply into the seed.
  3. Soak the seeds in warm water for 8–12 hours.
  4. Sow immediately after soaking.

🌿 How to Sow

  1. Use a loose, fertile, organic-rich, well-drained seed-starting mix.
  2. Sow seeds approximately 1–1.5 cm deep.
  3. Cover lightly with soil.
  4. Water gently.
  5. Keep the growing medium consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  6. Place the seed tray in a warm, bright location.
  7. Germination usually occurs within 5–14 days.
  8. Once seedlings begin growing vigorously, provide a strong trellis, fence, arch, or pergola.

🌱 Transplanting

  • Transplant when seedlings have developed 2–3 sets of true leaves.
  • Handle the roots carefully.
  • Space plants approximately 30–60 cm apart.
  • Choose a location with enough room for the vines to climb.
  • For containers, use a large, deep pot with excellent drainage.

☀️ Growing & Care

  • Sunlight: Full sun to light partial shade.
  • In the Gulf, provide morning sun and afternoon protection during periods of extreme heat.
  • Soil: Fertile, loose, organic-rich, and well drained.
  • Water: Water deeply when the upper layer of soil begins to dry.
  • Keep young plants regularly watered while establishing.
  • Avoid permanently wet soil.
  • Fertilizer: Add compost before planting and use a balanced fertilizer during active growth.
  • Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can produce excessive foliage and fewer flowers.

🌸 Flowering & Training

  • Flowering may begin approximately 8–12 weeks after sowing under favorable conditions.
  • Flowers generally open in the morning.
  • Guide young stems onto their support as they grow.
  • Train vines evenly across the trellis for better light exposure.
  • Remove damaged or excessively crowded growth when necessary.

🌡 Gulf Climate Tips

  • In Kuwait, October–November is highly recommended.
  • February–March is another good sowing period.
  • During summer, use mulch around the roots to reduce soil temperature and conserve moisture.
  • Provide afternoon shade during extreme heat.
  • Protect young vines from hot, dry winds.
  • Water preferably in the early morning.
  • Increase watering during very hot periods, but maintain excellent drainage.
  • Avoid leaving containers standing in water.

Tip: For Kuwait, sow Knowlians Black Night Morning Glory in October–November. Provide a sturdy climbing structure early because the vine can grow rapidly once temperatures become favorable.
