Lavender (Lavandula spp.) is a fragrant, drought-tolerant flowering plant that prefers excellent drainage, plenty of sunlight, and relatively dry conditions once established. In the Gulf, especially Kuwait, lavender is best started during the cooler season. Protecting seedlings from excessive humidity, overwatering, and extreme summer heat is particularly important.

🌱 Best Sowing Time

• Best sowing period: October–January.
• Best period in Kuwait: November–December.
• Seeds can also be started in January–February if temperatures remain moderate.
• Avoid: May–September and periods of extreme heat.
• Ideal germination temperature: approximately 18–22°C.

🌿 How to Sow the Seeds

1. Use a light, sterile, very well-drained seed-starting mix.
2. Lavender seeds are small—sow them on the surface or only very lightly covered.
3. Gently press the seeds into the growing medium.
4. Mist carefully rather than using a strong stream of water.
5. Keep the medium slightly moist, never wet or waterlogged.
6. Place the seed tray in a bright location with gentle morning light.
7. Once seedlings develop several true leaves, transplant them carefully.
8. Space plants approximately 30–45 cm apart, depending on the variety.

⏱ Germination

• Germination can take approximately 2–4 weeks, and some seeds may take longer.
• Keep temperatures moderate and moisture controlled.
• Do not allow the seed-starting medium to remain saturated.
• Good light and airflow are important once seedlings emerge.

🌱 Growing & Care

• Sunlight: Full sun is ideal once plants are established.
• In the Gulf, provide morning sun and light afternoon shade during very hot periods.
• Soil: Light, sandy or gritty, alkaline to neutral, and exceptionally well drained.
• Watering: Water lightly but regularly while seedlings establish. Once established, allow the soil to dry somewhat between waterings.
• Overwatering is one of the most common causes of lavender failure.
• Fertilizing: Lavender generally needs little fertilizer. Add a small amount of compost before planting and avoid excessive nitrogen.
• Good airflow around plants is essential.
• Avoid planting lavender in areas where water collects.

🌸 Flowering & Maintenance

• Lavender grown from seed may take one or more growing seasons to produce substantial flowering.
• Remove faded flower spikes to encourage a tidy, compact plant and potentially additional flowering.
• Light pruning after flowering helps maintain shape, but avoid cutting deeply into old woody stems.
• Good drainage is more important than frequent feeding.

• Cool-season sowing is strongly recommended in Kuwait and the hotter Gulf regions.
• November and December are particularly suitable for starting seeds.
• Protect young seedlings from extreme afternoon heat and hot, dry winds.
• During warm periods, use approximately 30–50% afternoon shade for young plants.
• Water preferably in the early morning.
• Reduce watering during cooler periods and increase it only when the soil begins to dry.
• Raised beds and containers with drainage holes are excellent options in Gulf conditions.
• Use a gritty growing medium rather than heavy clay soil.
• During extreme summer heat, move container-grown lavender to a bright location with afternoon protection.
