How to Seed Layia ‘Coastal Tidy Tips’ (Layia elegans platyglossa)
-
Sowing Time:
Sow directly outdoors from March to May, or in autumn (September–October) in mild climates for early spring flowering. These wildflowers do best when direct-sown, as they dislike transplanting. -
Sowing Depth:
Scatter seeds on the soil surface and cover lightly with about 0.5 cm of fine soil. Press gently to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. -
Soil:
Prefers light, well-drained sandy or loamy soil. Avoid rich or heavy clay soils. Layia thrives in poor to moderately fertile soil. -
Light & Temperature:
Choose a sunny, open location. Ideal germination temperature is 15–20 °C (59–68 °F). -
Germination Time:
Seeds germinate in 7–14 days under warm, bright, and moist conditions. -
Thinning / Spacing:
When seedlings are about 5–7 cm tall, thin them to 15–20 cm apart for strong, healthy growth and airflow. -
Growing Tips:
-
Water gently after sowing and keep soil lightly moist until seedlings establish.
-
Once mature, Layia is drought-tolerant and needs minimal watering.
-
Avoid overfertilizing — poor soil encourages more flowers.
-
The ‘Coastal Tidy Tips’ variety produces golden-yellow daisy-like blooms with neat white-tipped petals, perfect for borders, rock gardens, and wildflower meadows.
-
Blooms from spring to early summer, attracting bees and butterflies.
