How to Seed Lobelia ‘Cascade’ Mix (Lobelia pendula)
-
Sowing Time:
Sow indoors from February to April for summer flowering. Transplant outdoors once the risk of frost has passed (around May). Lobelia is ideal for hanging baskets, borders, and window boxes. -
Sowing Depth:
Do not cover the seeds!
Scatter seeds on the surface of moist seed compost and press gently — light is essential for germination. -
Soil:
Use fine, moist, well-drained compost or seed-starting mix. Once established, Lobelia prefers fertile, moisture-retentive soil outdoors. -
Light & Temperature:
Place in a bright location with temperatures around 18–22 °C (65–72 °F). Avoid strong direct sunlight during germination. -
Germination Time:
Seeds germinate in 14–21 days under warm and bright conditions. -
Transplanting:
When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant in small clumps into trays or pots. Harden off gradually before planting outdoors, spacing 10–15 cm apart. -
Growing Tips:
-
Keep the soil consistently moist — Lobelia doesn’t tolerate drying out.
-
Choose a sunny or lightly shaded position.
-
Remove faded flowers to encourage new blooms.
-
The ‘Cascade Mix’ produces a colorful trailing blend of blue, pink, white, and violet flowers, ideal for hanging baskets, planters, and borders.
-
Blooms continuously from early summer to autumn.
