How to Seed Lobelia ‘Cascade’ White (Lobelia pendula)
-
Sowing Time:
Sow indoors from February to April for summer blooms. Transplant outdoors after the danger of frost has passed (around May). Lobelia grows beautifully in hanging baskets, window boxes, and borders. -
Sowing Depth:
Do not cover the seeds!
Scatter seeds on the surface of moist soil or seed compost and press lightly — light is required for germination. -
Soil:
Use fine, well-drained, moist compost or seed-starting mix. Once established, Lobelia prefers fertile soil that retains moisture without becoming soggy. -
Light & Temperature:
Place the tray in a bright and warm location with a temperature of 18–22 °C (65–72 °F). Avoid direct, harsh sunlight during germination. -
Germination Time:
Seeds germinate within 14–21 days in warm, well-lit conditions. -
Transplanting:
When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant in small clumps into trays or pots. Harden off gradually before planting outdoors, spacing 10–15 cm apart. -
Growing Tips:
-
Keep the soil consistently moist — do not allow it to dry out.
-
Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot.
-
Remove spent blooms to promote continuous flowering.
-
The ‘Cascade White’ variety produces trailing plants with masses of pure white blooms, perfect for creating a soft, elegant look in hanging baskets or garden borders.
-
Flowers continuously from early summer until autumn, attracting bees and butterflies.
