How to Seed Mexican Hat (Ratibida columnifera)
-
Sowing Time:
Sow directly outdoors from March to May, or in autumn (September–October) in mild climates for early spring growth. Seeds can also be started indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. -
Sowing Depth:
Scatter the seeds on the surface of moist soil and press gently — do not cover, as light helps with germination. -
Soil:
Prefers well-drained, sandy or loamy soil. Avoid heavy clay or overly rich soil. Mexican Hat thrives in poor, dry soils once established. -
Light & Temperature:
Choose a sunny, open position. Ideal temperature for germination is 20–24 °C (68–75 °F). -
Germination Time:
Seeds usually germinate in 10–20 days under warm, bright conditions. -
Thinning / Transplanting:
When seedlings are about 5–7 cm tall, thin or transplant them to 25–30 cm apart. The plant forms clumps and needs space to develop strong stems. -
Growing Tips:
-
Water lightly and sparingly; this plant prefers dry to moderately moist conditions.
-
Once established, Mexican Hat is heat- and drought-tolerant.
-
Remove faded blooms to encourage more flowering.
-
The plant produces cone-shaped flowers with red and yellow drooping petals, resembling a “sombrero” — hence the name Mexican Hat.
-
Excellent for wildflower meadows, borders, and pollinator gardens.
