Abutilon, commonly called Flowering Maple, is a warm-climate ornamental plant. It can perform well in the Gulf when protected from the harshest summer sun and grown in fertile, well-drained soil.

🇬🇧 English

🌱 Best Sowing Time

  • Gulf: September–November and February–March.
  • Kuwait: October–November is the preferred period.
  • A second suitable period is February–March.
  • Avoid starting seeds outdoors during the peak summer heat.
  • Ideal germination temperature: approximately 20–25°C.

🌿 How to Sow the Seeds

  1. Use a light, fertile, well-drained seed-starting mix.
  2. Moisten the growing medium before sowing.
  3. Sow seeds approximately 0.5–1 cm deep.
  4. Cover lightly with fine soil or vermiculite.
  5. Water gently with a fine spray.
  6. Keep the medium evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  7. Place the seed tray in a warm, bright location with indirect or filtered sunlight.
  8. Germination usually takes approximately 1–3 weeks.

🌱 Transplanting

  • Transplant seedlings when they have developed 3–4 true leaves and are strong enough to handle.
  • Harden seedlings gradually before planting outdoors.
  • Space plants approximately 60–100 cm apart, depending on the variety and intended size.
  • Handle the young roots gently during transplanting.
  • Choose the permanent location carefully to minimize root disturbance.

☀️ Growing & Care

  • Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade.
  • In the Gulf, morning sun with afternoon shade is recommended, particularly during hot weather.
  • Soil: Fertile, organic-rich, loose, and well drained.
  • Water: Water regularly while establishing. Once established, keep moisture reasonably consistent but allow the surface to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Avoid prolonged waterlogging.
  • Add compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
  • Feed with a balanced fertilizer during active growth.
  • During flowering, a fertilizer formulated for flowering plants can be used periodically.
  • Prune lightly to encourage branching and maintain a compact shape.

🌸 Flowering

  • Abutilon may begin flowering approximately 4–8 months after sowing, depending on variety and growing conditions.
  • Mature plants can flower for an extended period in suitable conditions.
  • Because this is a mixed-flower selection, flower colors and patterns may vary between plants.

🌡 Gulf Climate Tips

  • In Kuwait, October–November is the best period for starting seeds.
  • Protect young plants from intense afternoon sun and hot, drying winds.
  • During extreme heat, approximately 40–50% afternoon shade can help reduce stress.
  • Maintain good airflow around plants.
  • Mulching can help conserve soil moisture and moderate root-zone temperatures.
  • Water preferably in the early morning.
  • Container-grown Abutilon can be moved to a protected, partially shaded position during extreme summer conditions.
  • Avoid placing containers against heat-reflecting walls or concrete surfaces.

Tip: Abutilon enjoys warmth but does not appreciate the combination of extreme Gulf heat + intense afternoon sun + dry wind. A bright location with morning sun and afternoon protection gives better results.
