How to Seed Nasturtium Tom Thumb ‘Black Velvet’ (Tropaeolum majus nanum)

  1. When to Sow: Sow directly outdoors in spring to early summer after the last frost, or indoors 3–4 weeks earlier for earlier blooms.

  2. Soil: Thrives in poor to moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid overly rich soil, as it encourages leaves rather than flowers.

  3. Sowing: Sow seeds 2 cm deep, spacing them 25–30 cm apart.

  4. Watering: Water lightly but regularly. Do not overwater, as nasturtiums prefer slightly drier soil once established.

  5. Germination: Seeds sprout in 10–14 days at 15–20 °C.

  6. Thinning/Transplanting: If sown thickly, thin seedlings to allow good airflow and spacing. Nasturtiums dislike root disturbance, so sow in place whenever possible.

  7. Care: Place in full sun for best flowering. Deadhead faded blooms to prolong flowering.

✨ Produces striking velvety deep-red to almost black flowers on compact, bushy plants with rounded green leaves. Perfect for beds, borders, containers, and edible gardens (flowers and leaves are edible).
