How to Seed Nemesia ‘Prince Orange’ (Nemesia strumosa)

  1. Best Time to Sow (Gulf Region):

    • Outdoors: From October to February, when temperatures range between 15–25°C (59–77°F).

    • Indoors or nursery trays: From December to February for early transplanting.

    • Avoid sowing from April to September, as high heat and humidity reduce germination and flower quality.

  2. Sowing Depth:
Sow seeds on the soil surfacedo not cover, as Nemesia seeds need light to germinate.
Press gently and mist lightly with water to keep the surface moist.

  3. Soil:
Prefers light, fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
    Ideal Gulf mix: 40% garden soil + 30% peat moss + 20% perlite + 10% compost.
    Avoid heavy or compacted soil.

  4. Light & Temperature:

    • Germination temperature: 18–22°C (64–72°F).

    • Requires bright light or full morning sun for healthy growth.

    • In the Gulf, morning sunlight and light afternoon shade are best to avoid heat stress.

  5. Germination Time:
Seeds germinate in 10–20 days under warm, moist conditions.

  6. Transplanting:

    • When seedlings reach 5–8 cm tall, transplant them gently into garden beds or pots.

    • Space plants 15–20 cm apart for compact, bushy growth.

    • Harden seedlings for a few days before moving outdoors permanently.

  7. Growing Tips for Gulf Climate:

    • Sunlight: Prefers full morning sun with partial afternoon shade in hot weather.

    • Watering: Water regularly but lightly, keeping the soil evenly moist without overwatering.

    • Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during the growing season.

    • Maintenance: Remove faded blooms to encourage new flowers.

    • The ‘Prince Orange’ variety produces bright orange flowers with a golden-yellow throat, ideal for borders, pots, and hanging baskets.

    • Blooms from late winter to early summer in the Gulf.
