How to Seed Painted Tongue ‘Superbissima’ Mix (Salpiglossis sinuata)

  1. Best Time to Sow (Gulf Region):

    • Outdoors (in shade): From October to February, when daytime temperatures stay below 28–30°C (82–86°F).

    • Indoors or greenhouse sowing: From December to February for early spring blooms.

    • Avoid sowing in hot months (March–September) — high heat prevents germination and damages young seedlings.

  2. Sowing Depth:
Sow seeds on the surface of moist seed compost and press gently. Do not cover, as light is needed for germination.

  3. Soil:
Use rich, well-drained, and slightly acidic soil. Ideal mix for Gulf climates:
    40% garden soil + 30% peat moss + 20% perlite + 10% compost.
The soil should retain moisture but drain well to avoid root rot.

  4. Light & Temperature:

    • Ideal germination temperature: 18–22°C (65–72°F).

    • Keep trays in bright, indirect light (never direct sun during germination).

    • Maintain humidity by misting or covering with a transparent lid or plastic wrap.

  5. Germination Time:
Seeds germinate in 10–20 days in warm, bright, and humid conditions.

  6. Transplanting:

    • When seedlings are about 8–10 cm tall and have 3–4 true leaves, transplant them outdoors.

    • Space plants 20–25 cm apart in partially shaded areas with protection from strong midday sun.

  7. Growing Tips for Gulf Conditions:

    • Water regularly but lightly — keep soil moist, not soggy.

    • Provide light morning sun and afternoon shade; avoid hot, dry winds.

    • Fertilize every 2–3 weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer.

    • The ‘Superbissima Mix’ produces velvety trumpet-shaped blooms in vivid colors like purple, pink, red, orange, yellow, and gold, with intricate veining — ideal for pots, flower beds, and shaded patios.

    • Blooms from late winter to early summer in the Gulf, adding exotic color to mild-season gardens.
