Peony Poppy Red is a stunning cool-season annual that produces large, fully double peony-like deep red flowers with silky petals. It is widely grown for ornamental gardens, flower beds, cottage gardens, borders, and cut or dried seed pods. In the Gulf region, it performs best during the cool season and should complete its life cycle before the intense summer heat.

Best Planting Time

  • November to January (recommended)
  • Sow during the coolest months for the best flowering.
  • Avoid planting during warm weather.

Seed Preparation

  • No soaking is required.
  • Seeds are very small—mix them with fine sand for more even sowing.
  • Use fresh, high-quality seeds.
  • No cold stratification is required.

Soil Preparation

Peony Poppies prefer light, fertile, well-drained soil.

Recommended mix:

  • 40% Sandy garden soil
  • 30% Well-rotted compost
  • 20% Coco peat
  • 10% Perlite or coarse sand

Ideal soil pH:

  • 6.5–7.5

Sowing Method

  • Direct sowing is highly recommended, as poppies dislike transplanting.
  • Scatter seeds evenly over the soil surface.
  • Press gently into the soil without covering, or cover with no more than 2 mm of fine soil.
  • Keep the soil lightly moist until germination.

Temperature & Light

  • Ideal germination temperature: 15–20°C
  • Ideal growing temperature: 15–25°C
  • Requires 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • Full sun provides the best flowering.

Watering

  • Keep the soil lightly moist during germination.
  • After establishment, water when the top 3–4 cm of soil becomes dry.
  • Avoid overwatering, especially during cool weather.

Germination Time

  • 10–20 days

Plant Spacing

  • Thin seedlings to 25–30 cm apart.
  • Leave 35–40 cm between rows.

Flowering

  • Flowers approximately 90–120 days after sowing.
  • Remove faded flowers if seed pods are not desired.
  • If seed pods are wanted for decoration or seed saving, allow them to mature naturally.

Fertilization

  • Incorporate compost before planting.
  • Apply a light balanced fertilizer once or twice during the growing season.
  • Avoid excessive nitrogen, which promotes foliage instead of flowers.

Gulf Climate Tips

  • Grow only during the cool season.
  • Water early in the morning.
  • Ensure excellent drainage.
  • Avoid disturbing the roots after germination.
  • Mulch lightly to maintain even soil moisture.
  • Monitor for aphids, thrips, powdery mildew, and root rot in poorly drained soil.
  • Peony Poppy Red is ideal for flower beds, cottage gardens, borders, ornamental displays, and dried floral arrangements throughout the Gulf.
