How to Seed Peony Poppy Red (Papaver paeoniflorum)

  1. When to Sow: Sow directly outdoors in spring or autumn. Poppies dislike transplanting, so always sow where they are to flower.

  2. Soil: Prefers light, well-drained soil in full sun. Avoid overly rich soils, which may encourage leaf growth over flowers.

  3. Sowing: Scatter seeds thinly over prepared soil and lightly press them in. Do not cover, as poppy seeds need light to germinate.

  4. Watering: Water gently to keep soil moist but never waterlogged.

  5. Germination: Seeds sprout in 14–21 days at 12–18 °C.

  6. Thinning: When seedlings are large enough, thin to 20–30 cm apart to allow strong plants to develop.

  7. Care: Minimal care is required—weed gently and water in dry periods. Deadhead spent blooms to prolong flowering or leave seed pods to self-sow.

✨ Produces large, lush, double red blooms resembling peonies, making a stunning display in borders, cottage gardens, and cut flower arrangements.
