Pompon Hi-no-maru Aster is a cool-season China aster that prefers mild temperatures. In the Gulf, especially Kuwait, it is best grown during autumn, winter, and early spring. Extreme summer heat can reduce germination and flowering.
🌱 Best Sowing Time
- Gulf: September–November and January–February.
- Kuwait: October–November is the preferred sowing period; January–February is also suitable.
- Avoid sowing outdoors during June–August because of extreme heat.
- Ideal germination temperature: approximately 18–22°C.
🌿 How to Sow the Seeds
- Use a light, fertile, fine-textured, and well-drained seed-starting mix.
- Sow seeds approximately 0.3–0.5 cm deep.
- Cover lightly with fine soil or vermiculite.
- Water gently using a fine spray.
- Keep the growing medium evenly moist but never waterlogged.
- Place the seed tray in a bright, cool location.
- Once seedlings develop 2–3 sets of true leaves, transplant carefully.
- Space plants approximately 20–30 cm apart.
⏱ Germination
- Germination generally takes 7–14 days under suitable conditions.
- Keep the medium consistently moist until seedlings emerge.
- Avoid overwatering, especially while seedlings are small.
- Provide good ventilation after emergence.
☀️ Growing & Care
- Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade.
- In the Gulf, provide morning sun and afternoon shade when temperatures rise.
- Soil: Fertile, loose, organic-rich, and very well drained.
- Watering: Keep the root zone moderately moist and allow the surface to dry slightly between waterings.
- Avoid both prolonged dryness and waterlogging.
- Water preferably at the base of the plant.
- Fertilizing: Add compost before planting and use a balanced flowering fertilizer during active growth.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage foliage rather than flowers.
🌸 Flowering & Maintenance
- Flowering generally begins approximately 10–14 weeks after sowing, depending on temperature and growing conditions.
- Remove faded flowers regularly to encourage additional blooms.
- Maintain good spacing and airflow to reduce fungal problems.
- Remove damaged or diseased foliage promptly.
- Protect plants from prolonged periods of extreme heat.
🌡 Gulf Climate Tips
- In Kuwait, October–November is particularly suitable for sowing Pompon Hi-no-maru Aster.
- During warmer periods, provide approximately 30–50% afternoon shade.
- Protect young plants from hot, dry winds.
- Water preferably in the early morning.
- Avoid keeping foliage wet overnight.
- Ensure excellent drainage, particularly in humid coastal areas.
- Container cultivation is useful because plants can be moved to a cooler, partially shaded location during hot periods.
Tip: For Kuwait, sow Pompon Hi-no-maru Aster in October–November to establish strong plants and enjoy its distinctive contrasting flowers during the cooler growing season.
