Poona Kheera is an Indian cucumber variety known for its distinctive fruits, which can develop from light green to brownish-orange as they mature. It is a warm-season crop and can perform well in the Gulf when planted during the cooler growing periods.

🌱 Best Growing Season in the Gulf

  • Best sowing time: September–November and February–March.
  • Best outdoor growing period: October–April.
  • Ideal growing temperature: 21–30°C.
  • Avoid sowing during peak summer, especially when temperatures regularly exceed 35°C.

🌿 Seed Sowing

  1. Choose a sunny location with fertile, well-draining soil.
  2. Sow seeds directly into the ground or into individual pots.
  3. Plant seeds approximately 1.5–2.5 cm deep.
  4. Space plants about 45–60 cm apart.
  5. Leave approximately 90–120 cm between rows.
  6. Water gently immediately after sowing.
  7. Keep the soil consistently moist until seedlings emerge.

⏱ Germination

  • Seeds generally germinate within 5–10 days under suitable conditions.
  • Keep the soil warm and moist, but avoid waterlogging.
  • Provide plenty of sunlight once seedlings emerge.

🌱 Growing & Care

  • Sunlight: Full sun, approximately 6–8 hours daily.
  • Soil: Fertile, loose, organic-rich, and well-draining.
  • Watering: Water regularly, especially during flowering and fruit development. Avoid allowing the soil to dry completely.
  • Fertilizing: Apply compost or a balanced vegetable fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during active growth.
  • Support: A trellis is recommended to keep vines off the ground, improve airflow, and make harvesting easier.
  • Mulch around the plants to conserve moisture and protect the root zone from Gulf heat.

🥒 Harvest

  • Harvest when fruits have reached the desired size and are firm and tender.
  • For eating fresh, harvest younger fruits for a milder texture.
  • Pick regularly to encourage continued production.
  • If left to mature, Poona Kheera fruits can develop a brownish or orange-brown skin, which is characteristic of the variety.

🌡 Gulf Climate Tips

  • Grow mainly during the cooler autumn, winter, and spring periods.
  • Provide afternoon shade when temperatures become unusually high.
  • Use drip irrigation for efficient and consistent watering.
  • Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation.
  • Protect young vines from hot, dry winds.
  • Ensure excellent drainage to prevent root diseases.
