How to Seed Popping Corn (Zea mays)
-
When to Sow: Sow outdoors in late spring to early summer once the soil is warm and frost danger has passed. Corn needs warm conditions to germinate well.
-
Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil, enriched with compost or organic matter, in a sunny location.
-
Sowing: Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep in blocks rather than single rows (to aid pollination). Space seeds 20–25 cm apart, with 60–75 cm between rows.
-
Watering: Water thoroughly after sowing and keep soil moist during dry spells, especially when tassels and cobs are forming.
-
Germination: Seeds sprout in 7–14 days at 18–24 °C.
-
Care: Keep weeds down by shallow hoeing and mulch to retain moisture. Corn is a heavy feeder—apply balanced fertilizer during growth.
-
Harvesting: Allow cobs to fully mature and dry on the plant. Harvest when kernels are hard and dry, then store in a cool, dry place.
✨ Produces tall plants with golden kernels perfect for popping. A fun and rewarding crop, ideal for home gardens and fresh, homemade popcorn.
