How to Seed Poppy ‘Hen & Chickens’ (Papaver somniferum)
-
Sowing Time:
Sow directly outdoors from March to May, or in autumn (September–October) for early blooms the following year. Poppies dislike transplanting, so direct sowing is best. -
Sowing Depth:
Scatter the seeds on the soil surface and press them gently — do not cover with soil, as light is needed for germination. -
Soil:
Prefers well-drained, light to moderately fertile soil. Avoid heavy or waterlogged soil. Poppies grow best in slightly sandy ground. -
Light & Temperature:
Choose a sunny, open position. Ideal germination temperature is 12–18 °C (54–65 °F). -
Germination Time:
Seeds usually germinate within 10–20 days depending on temperature and moisture. -
Thinning:
Once seedlings are about 5–7 cm tall, thin them to 20–25 cm apart to allow room for full growth. -
Growing Tips:
-
Water lightly during dry periods but do not overwater.
-
Remove faded flowers to extend blooming.
-
Allow some pods to mature if you want them to self-seed naturally.
-
The variety ‘Hen & Chickens’ produces large decorative seed pods surrounded by smaller “chick” pods, making it excellent for dried arrangements and cottage gardens.
