How to Seed Poppy Shirley Double Mix (Papaver rhoeas)
-
When to Sow: Sow directly outdoors in spring or autumn. Poppies dislike transplanting, so sow where they are to flower.
-
Soil: Prefers light, well-drained soil in full sun. Avoid very rich soils, which encourage excess foliage.
-
Sowing: Scatter seeds thinly over prepared soil and lightly press them in. Do not cover, as they need light to germinate.
-
Watering: Water gently to keep soil moist but not waterlogged.
-
Germination: Seeds sprout in 14–21 days at 12–18 °C.
-
Thinning: When seedlings are large enough, thin to 20–25 cm apart for best results.
-
Care: Requires little maintenance—just weed control and occasional watering in dry spells. Deadhead to extend flowering or leave pods for self-seeding.
✨ Produces masses of charming, ruffled double flowers in shades of red, pink, and white. Perfect for wildflower meadows, cottage gardens, and cut flowers.
