Radish 'Zlata' is a unique heirloom variety producing golden-yellow, round roots with crisp white flesh. It has a mild, slightly sweet flavor with only a hint of spice, making it excellent for fresh salads, garnishes, roasting, and pickling. It is well suited to Gulf gardens when grown during the cool season.

Best Planting Time

  • October to February (recommended)
  • Sow during the cool season for the highest-quality roots.
  • Avoid sowing during the hottest summer months.

Seed Preparation

  • No soaking is required.
  • Use fresh, high-quality seeds.
  • No cold stratification is needed.

Soil Preparation

Radishes prefer loose, fertile, stone-free, well-drained soil.

Recommended mix:

  • 40% Sandy garden soil
  • 30% Well-rotted compost
  • 20% Coco peat
  • 10% Perlite or coarse sand

Ideal soil pH:

  • 6.0–7.0

Sowing Method

  • Direct sowing is recommended.
  • Sow seeds 1–1.5 cm deep.
  • Place 1 seed per hole.
  • Thin seedlings after germination if necessary.

Temperature & Light

  • Ideal germination temperature: 12–22°C
  • Ideal growing temperature: 15–25°C
  • Requires 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • In warmer Gulf areas, light afternoon shade helps maintain tender, mild-flavored roots.

Watering

  • Keep the soil evenly moist throughout growth.
  • Water whenever the top 2–3 cm of soil begins to dry.
  • Consistent watering prevents cracked, woody, or overly spicy roots.
  • Avoid waterlogging.

Germination Time

  • 4–8 days

Plant Spacing

  • 8–10 cm between plants.
  • 25–30 cm between rows.

Harvest

  • Harvest 25–35 days after sowing.
  • Harvest when roots reach 3–5 cm in diameter for the best flavor and crisp texture.
  • Harvest promptly to prevent roots from becoming fibrous.

Fertilization

  • Mix compost into the soil before planting.
  • Apply a light balanced fertilizer once after seedlings are established.
  • Avoid excessive nitrogen, which encourages leafy growth rather than root development.

Gulf Climate Tips

  • Grow only during the cool season.
  • Water early in the morning.
  • Apply a thin layer of mulch to reduce soil temperature and conserve moisture.
  • Sow every 2–3 weeks for continuous harvests.
  • Monitor for aphids, flea beetles, cabbage worms, root maggots, and downy mildew.
  • Radish 'Zlata' performs well in home gardens, raised beds, containers, and vegetable gardens throughout the Gulf.
