Dwarf Cherry refers to compact cherry varieties grown for their smaller size, making them suitable for containers and small gardens. Like other cherries, they require winter chilling (typically 300–800 chill hours, depending on the variety) to flower and fruit. In the Gulf region, they can be grown as ornamental trees, but reliable fruit production is limited unless a low-chill variety is used or the tree is grown in a controlled environment.

• November to January (recommended)
• Plant during the coolest months of the year.

Seed Preparation

Cherry seeds require cold stratification.

1. Remove all fruit flesh from the pit.
2. Wash and dry the pit for 1–2 days.
3. Place the seed in moist peat moss, coco peat, or vermiculite.
4. Refrigerate at 2–5°C for 8–12 weeks.
5. Sow immediately after stratification.

Soil Preparation

Use fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.

Recommended mix:

• 40% Garden soil
• 30% Compost
• 20% Coco peat
• 10% Perlite or coarse sand

Ideal soil pH:

• 6.0–7.0

Sowing Method

• Sow in deep pots or nursery bags.
• Plant seeds 2–3 cm deep.
• Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.

Temperature & Light

• Ideal germination temperature: 15–20°C
• Ideal growing temperature: 15–25°C
• Requires full sun (6–8 hours daily) during winter.
• Provide afternoon shade during hot weather.

Watering

• Water regularly to keep the soil slightly moist.
• Allow the top 3–5 cm of soil to dry between waterings.
• Avoid standing water around the roots.

Germination Time

• 30–90 days after completing cold stratification.

Transplanting

• Transplant when seedlings are 20–30 cm tall.
• Space plants:
  • 2–3 meters apart for dwarf varieties.
• If growing in containers, use a pot of at least 40–60 liters.

Fruiting

• Trees grown from seed may take 4–7 years to produce fruit.
• Seed-grown trees may not produce fruit identical to the parent plant.

Gulf Climate Tips

• Choose low-chill dwarf cherry varieties whenever possible.
• Protect young plants from temperatures above 38°C.
• Mulch around the base to keep roots cool and retain moisture.
• Container growing is recommended so trees can be moved to cooler, sheltered locations during extreme summer heat.
• Good air circulation helps reduce fungal diseases.
