Red Giant Mustard is a fast-growing leafy mustard with large, attractive reddish-purple leaves and a pleasantly spicy flavor. It prefers cool to mild weather, so in the Gulf it is best grown during the cooler months.

🌱 Best Growing Season

• Best sowing time: October–January.
• In cooler Gulf areas, sowing can also be done in February.
• Avoid: Late spring and summer, when high temperatures can cause early flowering and make the leaves more bitter or tough.
• Ideal growing temperature: 10–24°C.

🌿 Seed Sowing

1. Choose a location with fertile, loose, well-drained soil.
2. Sow seeds directly into the soil or into containers.
3. Plant seeds approximately 0.5–1 cm deep.
4. Space plants about 15–25 cm apart for mature leaves.
5. Leave approximately 30–45 cm between rows.
6. Water gently immediately after sowing.
7. Keep the soil evenly moist until germination.

⏱ Germination

• Seeds usually germinate within 4–8 days under suitable conditions.
• Keep the seedbed consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging.
• Thin seedlings once they emerge, leaving the strongest plants.

🌱 Growing & Care

• Sunlight: Full sun during the cooler season. Provide light afternoon shade when temperatures rise.
• Soil: Fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil enriched with compost.
• Watering: Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture. Uneven watering can make leaves tougher and more bitter.
• Fertilizing: Add compost before planting. A balanced leafy-vegetable fertilizer can be applied every 3–4 weeks during active growth.
• Avoid excessive nitrogen.
• Keep the growing area free of weeds.

🥬 Harvest

• Young leaves can be harvested approximately 25–35 days after sowing.
• For baby greens, harvest earlier when leaves are young and tender.
• For larger leaves, allow the plant to mature further and harvest the outer leaves first.
• Harvest regularly to encourage new growth.
• In warm weather, harvest promptly because mature mustard leaves can become stronger and more bitter.

• In Kuwait and other very hot Gulf regions, November–January is particularly suitable.
• Provide afternoon shade when daytime temperatures begin rising.
• Use a light mulch layer to keep the soil cooler and retain moisture.
• Drip irrigation is recommended for efficient watering.
• Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation.
• Protect plants from hot, dry winds.
• For continuous harvest, sow a new batch every 2–3 weeks during the cool season.
