300 Seeds
Rock Cress Cascade ‘Leichtlinii’ is a low-growing, spreading perennial that forms a dense cascading mat of foliage covered with attractive purple-violet flowers in spring. It is especially suitable for rock gardens, walls, slopes, borders, raised beds and containers. The trailing habit allows it to spill beautifully over the edges of pots and low walls.
It prefers sunny locations and light, gritty, very well-drained soil. Once established, Rock Cress can tolerate relatively dry conditions, but excessive moisture around the crown can cause problems.
🌱 Best Planting Time in the Gulf
Because Rock Cress is naturally adapted to cooler growing conditions, it should be grown in the cooler Gulf season.
- Gulf area: September–March
- Kuwait: October–February
- Best period in Kuwait: October–December
- A second sowing can be attempted in January–February while temperatures remain moderate.
- Avoid starting seeds during the hottest part of summer.
For Gulf conditions, starting the seeds in a protected tray during the cooler season gives better control over germination and early growth.
🌿 How to Plant the Seeds
- Use a clean seed tray or small pots filled with a light, well-drained seed-starting mix.
- Moisten the growing medium before sowing.
- Scatter the seeds on the surface.
- Do not bury the seeds deeply. Rock Cress seeds benefit from light for germination.
- Press the seeds gently against the surface. A very thin dusting of vermiculite or fine grit can be used if necessary.
- Keep the medium consistently moist but never waterlogged.
- Place the tray in a bright location at approximately 18–20°C.
- Germination normally takes around 14–21 days, although it can sometimes be slower.
🌡️ Germination
- Germination temperature: approximately 18–20°C
- Germination time: about 14–21 days
- Sowing depth: Surface sow / barely covered
- Moisture: Keep evenly moist, not saturated
Do not allow the seed tray to become excessively hot. In Kuwait, indoor or protected germination during the cooler season can be more reliable than exposing young seedlings to direct summer heat.
🌱 Transplanting
When the seedlings have developed several true leaves and are large enough to handle:
- Carefully transplant them into individual small pots.
- Allow the young plants to establish a good root system.
- Gradually acclimatize them to outdoor conditions.
- Plant them into their final position approximately 25–30 cm apart.
Avoid disturbing the roots unnecessarily during transplanting.
☀️ Sunlight
Rock Cress prefers full sun, but Gulf heat requires some adjustment.
- Give young plants bright morning sunlight.
- Provide light afternoon shade when temperatures become high.
- A location receiving approximately 4–6 hours of useful sunlight with protection from extreme afternoon heat can work well in Kuwait.
- Good air circulation is important.
In very hot Gulf conditions, excessive afternoon sun can stress the plants even though the species generally prefers sunny conditions.
💧 Watering
Keep the soil lightly moist while seeds are germinating and while young plants are establishing.
Once established:
- Water when the upper layer of soil begins to dry.
- Give a thorough watering rather than frequent shallow watering.
- Allow excess water to drain completely.
- Reduce watering during periods of extreme heat if the plant is naturally slowing down.
- Never leave the crown sitting in wet soil.
Rock Cress is relatively drought tolerant once established, but poor drainage and constantly wet soil are more dangerous than moderate dryness.
🌱 Soil
Use light, gritty and very well-drained soil.
A suitable container mix can include:
- Quality potting soil
- Compost in a modest amount
- Perlite or pumice
- Coarse sand or horticultural grit
Rock Cress generally performs well in moderately fertile, sandy or gritty soil and can tolerate slightly alkaline/calcareous conditions.
Avoid heavy soil that remains wet after irrigation.
🌿 Fertilizing
Rock Cress does not require heavy feeding.
- Add a small amount of mature compost before planting.
- Use a mild balanced fertilizer during active growth if the soil is poor.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen because lush foliage can develop at the expense of a compact flowering habit.
🌸 Flowering
Once established and provided with suitable cool conditions, ‘Leichtlinii’ produces a dense display of purple-violet flowers in spring.
Seed-grown plants may not flower strongly in their first season, particularly when started late. A well-established plant that experiences a suitable cool period is more likely to produce a heavy spring flowering display.
✂️ After Flowering
After the main flowering period:
- Lightly trim the plant to maintain a compact shape.
- Cutting back after flowering encourages fresh foliage and can help maintain a dense, attractive mat.
- Avoid heavy pruning during autumn.
- Remove damaged or unhealthy foliage when necessary.
🪴 Growing in Containers
Rock Cress Cascade ‘Leichtlinii’ is excellent for containers.
Use:
- A wide rather than excessively deep pot
- Excellent drainage holes
- Gritty, free-draining soil
- Several plants spaced approximately 25–30 cm apart
- Morning sun with afternoon protection during hot weather
Its cascading growth is particularly attractive when planted near the edge of a pot or raised planter.
🔥 Gulf Climate Tips
- Kuwait: October–December is the preferred sowing period.
- Start seeds around 18–20°C rather than during hot weather.
- Surface sow because light helps the seeds germinate.
- Use excellent drainage.
- Give young plants morning sun and protect them from extreme afternoon heat.
- Avoid overwatering.
- Raised beds, rockeries and containers are particularly useful in Gulf conditions.
- Expect the strongest flowering during the cooler season rather than during summer.
- Trim lightly after flowering to keep the plant compact.
🌱 Growing Tip: For Kuwait, sow ‘Leichtlinii’ in a protected tray during the cooler season, keep the seeds on the surface, and transplant the young plants once established. The combination of cool temperatures + excellent drainage + morning sunlight is especially important for this plant.
