Rose Mallow 'Ruby Regis' is a stunning hardy hibiscus that produces very large, deep ruby-red flowers on strong stems. It is a warm-season perennial that can reach 1–1.5 meters tall and is excellent for flower borders, ponds, landscape gardens, large containers, and pollinator gardens. In the Gulf region, it grows best when started during the cooler season and grown through spring and summer with sufficient water.
Best Planting Time
- October to February (recommended in Gulf climates)
- Can also be started indoors earlier and transplanted in spring.
- Avoid sowing directly during the hottest summer months.
Seed Preparation
- Rose Mallow seeds have a hard outer coating.
- Lightly scratch the seed surface with sandpaper (scarification) before sowing.
- Soak seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours after scarification to improve germination.
Soil Preparation
Rose Mallow prefers fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.
Recommended mix:
- 40% Sandy loam soil
- 30% Compost or well-rotted organic matter
- 20% Coco peat
- 10% Perlite
Ideal soil pH:
- 6.0–7.5
Sowing Method
- Sow seeds in trays or small pots.
- Plant seeds 0.5–1 cm deep.
- Cover lightly with fine soil.
- Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
- Transplant seedlings when they have 3–5 true leaves and the weather is mild.
Temperature & Light
- Ideal germination temperature: 20–25°C
- Ideal growing temperature: 20–32°C
- Requires 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- In very hot Gulf summers, some afternoon shade can protect leaves and extend flowering.
Watering
- Keep soil moist during germination.
- Once established, water regularly; Rose Mallow prefers more moisture than many garden plants.
- In Gulf heat, deep watering 2–4 times per week may be needed depending on soil and temperature.
- Avoid allowing plants to dry completely during flowering.
Germination Time
- 14–30 days
Plant Spacing
- 60–90 cm between plants.
- Allow enough space for mature growth.
Flowering
- Flowers usually appear 4–6 months after sowing.
- Large ruby-red blooms open mainly during warm weather.
- Remove faded flowers to maintain a tidy appearance.
Fertilization
- Add compost before planting.
- Feed every 4–6 weeks during active growth with a balanced fertilizer.
- Use a fertilizer slightly higher in potassium during flowering to encourage larger blooms.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen, which promotes leaves instead of flowers.
Gulf Climate Tips
- Plant in a sunny location with rich soil.
- Keep roots cool with mulch during hot months.
- Provide regular irrigation during summer.
- Protect young plants from strong winds.
- Good air circulation helps prevent fungal problems.
- Monitor for aphids, whiteflies, spider mites, and leaf diseases.
- 'Ruby Regis' performs beautifully near water features, garden borders, large pots, and tropical-style landscapes throughout the Gulf.
