How to Seed Sage Red-Orange (Salvia splendens)
-
Sowing Time:
Sow seeds indoors from February to April, about 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Transplant outdoors once the weather is warm and frost-free (around May). -
Sowing Depth:
Sow seeds on the surface of moist soil or seed compost and press gently — do not cover, as light helps germination. -
Soil:
Use fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Salvia prefers loamy or sandy soil that retains moisture without becoming soggy. -
Light & Temperature:
Keep seeds in a bright, warm place with temperatures between 20–25 °C (68–77 °F). Avoid direct, harsh sunlight during germination. -
Germination Time:
Seeds usually germinate within 10–21 days under warm, moist conditions. -
Transplanting:
When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots. Harden off gradually before planting outdoors 20–25 cm apart in full sun. -
Growing Tips:
-
Choose a sunny location for rich color and healthy growth.
-
Water regularly, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged.
-
Deadhead (remove spent blooms) to promote continuous flowering.
-
The Red-Orange Salvia produces vivid flame-colored flower spikes that bloom throughout summer, perfect for borders, pots, and garden displays.
