How to Seed Sage “Tango Red” (Salvia splendens)
-
Sowing Time:
Sow indoors from February to April, about 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Transplant outdoors once the weather is warm and frost-free (around May). -
Sowing Depth:
Sow seeds on the surface of moist seed compost and press lightly — do not cover, as light helps germination. -
Soil:
Use well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Salvia prefers loamy or sandy soil with good aeration. -
Light & Temperature:
Place in a bright, warm location with temperatures between 20–25 °C (68–77 °F). Provide plenty of light but avoid direct scorching sunlight during germination. -
Germination Time:
Seeds germinate in 10–21 days under warm, moist conditions. -
Transplanting:
When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots. Once hardened off, plant them outdoors 20–25 cm apart in full sun. -
Growing Tips:
-
Choose a sunny position for the best color and growth.
-
Water regularly, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged.
-
Remove faded flowers to encourage continuous blooming.
-
The Tango Red variety produces brilliant red flower spikes that bloom all summer, perfect for borders, pots, and decorative garden beds.
