250 Seeds
Savory is a fragrant herb that prefers sunny conditions, moderate temperatures, and well-drained soil. It can tolerate dry conditions once established, making it suitable for Gulf climates. However, seedlings and young plants need protection from extreme summer heat.
🌱 Best Sowing Time
- Best sowing periods in the Gulf: September–March.
- Best period in Kuwait: October–February.
- Sow when temperatures are around 15–25°C.
- Avoid starting seeds outdoors during May–August, when extreme heat can stress young seedlings.
- For continuous production, make successive sowings every 4–6 weeks during the suitable season.
🌿 How to Sow the Seeds
- Use a light, fertile, well-drained seed-starting mix.
- Savory seeds are small, so sow them on the surface or only 2–3 mm deep.
- Cover very lightly with fine soil or vermiculite.
- Mist gently with water.
- Keep the growing medium slightly moist but never waterlogged.
- Place the seed tray in a bright location with gentle morning sunlight.
- Once seedlings develop several true leaves, thin or transplant them.
- Space plants approximately 20–30 cm apart.
⏱ Germination
- Germination generally takes around 7–14 days.
- Keep the seed-starting mix evenly moist during this period.
- Avoid heavy watering, which can move the small seeds.
- Good ventilation helps prevent fungal problems.
🌱 Growing & Care
- Sunlight: Full sun is ideal.
- In the Gulf, provide morning sun with light afternoon shade during hotter periods.
- Soil: Light, moderately fertile, sandy or loamy, and very well drained.
- Savory dislikes constantly wet soil.
- Watering: Water regularly while plants are young. Once established, allow the upper soil to dry slightly between waterings.
- Avoid prolonged drought while the plant is actively producing new leaves.
- Fertilizing: Mix compost into the soil before planting. Use a mild balanced fertilizer only when necessary.
- Excessive fertilizer can produce soft growth with less concentrated aroma.
🌿 Harvesting
- Begin harvesting once the plants are well established and have sufficient leafy growth.
- Cut young stems and leaves as needed.
- Harvest preferably before flowering for the strongest culinary aroma.
- Regularly trimming the growing tips encourages a bushier plant.
- Do not remove more than about one-third of the plant at one time.
🌸 Flowering & Maintenance
- Pinch growing tips to encourage branching.
- Remove damaged or weak stems.
- If the plant begins flowering, cut back the flowering stems if you want to prioritize leaf production.
- Savory generally produces its best leafy growth during mild weather.
🌡 Gulf Climate Tips
- Savory is best grown in the Gulf during autumn, winter, and early spring.
- In Kuwait, October–February is particularly suitable for establishing plants.
- During warmer weather, provide approximately 30–50% afternoon shade.
- Use containers with excellent drainage if garden soil is heavy.
- Water preferably in the early morning.
- Protect young seedlings from hot, dry winds.
- A light layer of mulch can help reduce moisture loss, but keep the area around the stem well ventilated.
- Container-grown plants can be moved to a partially shaded location during periods of extreme heat.
