Shiso Green Leaf is an aromatic herb with fresh green leaves commonly used in Japanese and Asian cuisine. It prefers warm but not extreme temperatures, so in the Gulf it is best grown during the cooler parts of the year. Extreme summer heat can cause bolting, leaf scorching, and reduced leaf quality.
🌱 Best Sowing Time
- Best sowing periods: September–November and February–March.
- Best period in Kuwait: October–November and February.
- Avoid sowing during June–August because of extreme heat.
- Ideal germination temperature: approximately 20–25°C.
🌿 How to Sow the Seeds
- Use a light, fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained seed-starting mix.
- Sow seeds on the surface or only 2–3 mm deep.
- Cover very lightly with fine soil or vermiculite.
- Mist gently with water.
- Keep the medium consistently moist but not waterlogged.
- Place the seed tray in a bright location with morning sunlight or bright indirect light.
- Once seedlings develop 2–4 true leaves, transplant carefully.
- Space plants approximately 20–30 cm apart.
⏱ Germination
- Seeds generally germinate within 7–14 days under suitable conditions.
- Keep the seed-starting medium evenly moist.
- Do not bury the seeds deeply.
- Good light after germination helps produce compact, healthy seedlings.
- Provide good ventilation to reduce fungal problems.
🌱 Growing & Care
- Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade.
- In the Gulf, morning sun with afternoon shade is recommended, especially as temperatures rise.
- Soil: Fertile, rich in organic matter, moisture-retentive, and well drained.
- Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during hot weather.
- Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely.
- At the same time, avoid standing water.
- Fertilizing: Add compost before planting and use a balanced herb fertilizer during active growth.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen if you want strong flavor and compact growth.
🌿 Harvesting
- Begin harvesting when plants are approximately 15–20 cm tall and have several healthy leaves.
- Pick the young, tender leaves regularly.
- Harvesting the growing tips encourages bushier plants and continued leaf production.
- Avoid removing too many leaves at once.
- For the best flavor, harvest leaves in the morning.
🌸 Preventing Early Flowering
- Shiso can flower and produce seeds when exposed to suitable day-length and stress conditions.
- High temperatures and drought stress can accelerate bolting.
- Regular harvesting of the growing tips helps maintain leafy growth.
- Keep plants adequately watered during warm weather.
- Once the plant flowers heavily, leaf production and quality may decline.
🌡 Gulf Climate Tips
- Shiso performs best in the Gulf during the autumn, winter, and early spring seasons.
- During warmer weather, provide approximately 30–50% afternoon shade.
- Water preferably in the early morning.
- Container cultivation is particularly useful because plants can be moved into partial shade during periods of extreme heat.
- Protect young plants from hot, dry winds.
- A layer of organic mulch can help maintain soil moisture and keep the root zone cooler.
- For continuous fresh leaves, make successive sowings every 3–4 weeks during the suitable growing season.
Tip: For Kuwait, an October–November sowing is especially suitable for producing healthy green shiso through the cooler months.
