10 Seeds
Sorghum bicolor, commonly known as sorghum, is a warm-season cereal crop that tolerates heat and drought better than many other grains. In the Gulf, it can grow well when planted during a warm period with adequate irrigation, but the hottest summer conditions should be avoided for young plants.
🌱 Best Growing Season
- Best sowing time: March–April and September–October.
- In the cooler Gulf areas, sowing can also be made during February.
- Avoid sowing during the most extreme summer heat, particularly June–August.
- Ideal soil temperature for germination: 18–30°C.
- Best growth occurs in warm conditions with good sunlight.
🌿 Seed Sowing
- Choose a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil.
- Sow seeds directly into the soil.
- Plant seeds approximately 2–3 cm deep.
- Space plants about 15–25 cm apart for grain production.
- Leave approximately 45–60 cm between rows.
- Water thoroughly after sowing.
- Keep the soil consistently moist until seedlings are established.
⏱ Germination
- Seeds generally germinate within 5–10 days under suitable conditions.
- Maintain even moisture during germination.
- Avoid excessive watering or standing water.
- Once seedlings emerge, provide plenty of direct sunlight.
🌱 Growing & Care
- Sunlight: Full sun, ideally 6–8 hours daily.
- Soil: Fertile, deep, loose, and well-drained soil.
- Watering: Water regularly during establishment and important growth stages. Sorghum is relatively drought tolerant once established, but irrigation improves growth and grain production.
- Fertilizing: Add compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting. Apply a balanced fertilizer during early growth if needed.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen unless the crop is being grown specifically for vigorous forage production.
- Keep weeds controlled during the early growth stage.
🌾 Flowering & Pollination
- Sorghum produces flowering panicles above the foliage.
- Good sunlight and adequate moisture during flowering help improve seed and grain development.
- Avoid severe water stress during flowering because it can reduce grain production.
🌾 Harvest
- For dry grain, allow the seed heads to mature and the grains to become hard and dry.
- Harvest when the grains have reached their mature color and moisture has decreased.
- For green forage, harvest according to the intended use and before the plants become excessively mature.
- Dry harvested grain thoroughly before storage.
🌡 Gulf Climate Tips
- In very hot areas such as Kuwait and inland Saudi Arabia, avoid establishing young plants during the peak of summer.
- Drip irrigation is recommended for efficient water management.
- Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation.
- Use mulch where practical to conserve soil moisture.
- Protect young seedlings from strong, hot, dry winds.
- Excellent drainage is important, especially where frequent irrigation is required.
