How to Seed Spider Flower ‘Fountain’ Mix (Cleome hassleriana)
-
Sowing Time:
Sow indoors from February to April, or directly outdoors from April to May after the danger of frost has passed. In warm climates, seeds can also be sown in autumn (September–October) for early spring blooms. -
Seed Preparation:
For faster germination, soak seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours before sowing. This softens the seed coat. -
Sowing Depth:
Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep in moist, well-drained soil or seed compost. Cover lightly and firm gently. -
Soil:
Use well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Avoid overly rich soil, as it can produce too much foliage and fewer flowers. -
Light & Temperature:
Choose a sunny, warm spot. Ideal temperature for germination is 20–24 °C (68–75 °F). Cleome loves full sun and heat once established. -
Germination Time:
Seeds germinate in 10–21 days under warm, moist conditions. -
Transplanting:
When seedlings are about 8–10 cm tall, transplant them outdoors, spacing 30–45 cm apart to allow airflow and growth. -
Growing Tips:
-
Water regularly during early growth, then moderately once established — Cleome is drought-tolerant.
-
Deadhead (remove faded flowers) to encourage new blooms.
-
Support tall plants if grown in windy areas.
-
The ‘Fountain Mix’ variety produces tall, airy clusters of pink, white, and purple flowers with long stamens that resemble spider legs — stunning for borders and background planting.
-
Blooms from summer until frost and attracts pollinators and hummingbirds.
