How to Seed Squash ‘Marina di Chioggia’ (Cucurbita maxima)
-
When to Sow: Sow indoors in late spring (April–May), 3–4 weeks before the last frost. In warm climates, sow directly outdoors once the soil is warm and frost-free.
-
Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter, in a sunny position.
-
Sowing: Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep in pots or directly in the ground. For outdoor sowing, plant in groups of 2–3 seeds, spacing 90–120 cm apart.
-
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water at the base to avoid wetting leaves.
-
Germination: Seeds sprout in 7–14 days at 18–25 °C.
-
Thinning: If several seeds germinate together, thin to the strongest seedling.
-
Care: Mulch to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Feed with a potassium-rich fertilizer during fruiting. Train vines to give plants room to spread.
-
Harvesting: Harvest in late summer to autumn when fruits are fully mature, skin is hard, and stems begin to dry. Cure in a warm, dry place for longer storage.
✨ Produces large, deeply ribbed, dark green fruits with sweet, dense orange flesh. Excellent for roasting, soups, and traditional Italian dishes.
