How to Seed Starflower Pincushions “Drumsticks” (Scabiosa stellata)
-
Sowing Time:
Sow indoors from February to April, or directly outdoors from April to May after the risk of frost has passed. In warm climates, seeds can also be sown in autumn (September–October) for early blooms the next year. -
Sowing Depth:
Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep in moist, well-drained soil or seed compost. Cover lightly and press gently. -
Soil:
Use fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost. Scabiosa prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soil and dislikes soggy conditions. -
Light & Temperature:
Place seeds in a bright, sunny position with temperatures between 18–21 °C (65–70 °F). -
Germination Time:
Seeds germinate within 10–20 days under ideal warm and moist conditions. -
Transplanting:
When seedlings are strong enough to handle, transplant them into pots or garden beds, spacing 25–30 cm apart. -
Growing Tips:
-
Choose a full-sun location for best results.
-
Water moderately; allow the top soil to dry slightly between waterings.
-
Remove faded blooms to extend flowering.
-
The variety “Drumsticks” produces unique spherical seed heads resembling small “drumsticks” or “pincushions,” excellent for cut and dried flower arrangements.
-
Blooms in summer through early autumn and attracts bees and butterflies.
