Styrian Hulless Pumpkin is a unique pumpkin variety grown primarily for its dark green, shell-less (naked) seeds, which are rich in healthy oils, protein, zinc, and magnesium. The seeds are widely used for snacking, roasting, baking, and producing premium pumpkin seed oil. The flesh is edible but is not the main reason this variety is grown. In the Gulf region, it performs best during the cool growing season.
Best Planting Time
- September to November (recommended)
- A second planting is possible from January to February in cooler Gulf areas.
- Avoid planting during late spring and summer because excessive heat reduces flowering and fruit development.
Seed Preparation
- No soaking is required.
- Optional: Soak seeds in lukewarm water for 4–6 hours before sowing to improve germination.
- Use fresh, high-quality seeds.
Soil Preparation
Pumpkins thrive in fertile, loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
Recommended mix:
- 40% Sandy loam soil
- 30% Well-rotted compost or manure
- 20% Coco peat
- 10% Perlite
Ideal soil pH:
- 6.0–7.2
Sowing Method
- Sow seeds directly into the garden whenever possible.
- Plant 2–3 seeds per hole, 2.5–3 cm deep.
- Thin to the strongest seedling after germination.
- If using seed trays, transplant carefully before roots become crowded.
Temperature & Light
- Ideal germination temperature: 22–30°C
- Ideal growing temperature: 20–30°C
- Requires full sun (6–8 hours daily).
- During unusually warm Gulf spring days, provide light afternoon shade.
Watering
- Keep soil evenly moist during germination.
- Water deeply when the top 3–5 cm of soil becomes dry.
- Reduce watering slightly as fruits mature.
- Avoid wetting the leaves to reduce fungal diseases.
Germination Time
- 5–10 days
Plant Spacing
- 90–120 cm between plants.
- 150–200 cm between rows.
Harvest
- Harvest approximately 90–110 days after sowing.
- Fruits are ready when:
- The rind becomes hard.
- The stem turns brown and dry.
- The skin develops its mature color.
- Cure harvested pumpkins in a dry, shaded, well-ventilated place for 7–10 days before extracting the seeds.
- Scoop out the seeds, wash them, and dry thoroughly before storage or roasting.
Fertilization
- Mix compost into the soil before planting.
- Feed every 2–3 weeks with a balanced vegetable fertilizer.
- Increase potassium during flowering and fruit development.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen once vines begin flowering.
Gulf Climate Tips
- Grow only during the cooler months.
- Apply mulch to conserve soil moisture and keep roots cool.
- Water early in the morning.
- Bees are essential for pollination; hand-pollinate if bee activity is low.
- Monitor for aphids, whiteflies, spider mites, squash vine borers (where present), powdery mildew, and downy mildew.
- Allow fruits to fully mature for the highest seed quality and oil content.
