Summer Crisp lettuce, also known as Batavian-type lettuce, combines the tenderness of leaf lettuce with the crisp texture of heading lettuce. It tolerates warm conditions better than many traditional lettuce types, making it a useful choice for the Gulf. However, extreme Gulf summer heat can still cause bolting and bitterness, so it is best grown during the cooler months.

Best Planting Time

• September to February — suitable for most Gulf areas.
• October to January is generally the best period for strong head development.
• In cooler Gulf locations, sowing can continue into March.
• Avoid the hottest months of May–August.

Seed Preparation

• No soaking is required.
• Lettuce seeds are very small and should not be planted deeply.
• Use fresh, high-quality seeds.

Soil Preparation

Use fertile, loose, moisture-retentive soil with good drainage.

Recommended mix:

• 40% Sandy loam soil
• 30% Well-rotted compost
• 20% Coco peat
• 10% Perlite

Ideal soil pH:

• 6.0–7.0

Sowing Method

• Sow in seed trays or directly into prepared beds.
• Plant seeds only 0.3–0.5 cm deep.
• Cover with a very thin layer of fine soil.

• In the Gulf, provide 30–40% afternoon shade when temperatures rise above about 25–28°C.
• Morning sun with afternoon protection is particularly useful in warmer areas.

Watering

• Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged.
• Water when the upper 1–2 cm begins to dry.
• Check container-grown plants daily during warm weather.
• Water early in the morning.
• Avoid irregular watering, which can contribute to bitter leaves and tip burn.

• 25–30 cm between plants.
• 30–40 cm between rows.
• For baby-leaf harvesting, plants can be grown closer together.

Harvest

• Baby leaves can be harvested from approximately 25–35 days after sowing.
• Mature leaves or heads generally take around 45–70 days, depending on temperature.
• Harvest individual outer leaves for continuous production, or cut the whole plant when the head is well developed.
• Harvest in the early morning for maximum crispness.

Fertilization

• Add compost before sowing.
• Apply a mild balanced fertilizer approximately 2–3 weeks after transplanting.
• If harvesting repeatedly, feed lightly every 2–3 weeks.
• Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can produce soft, overly lush growth.

Gulf Climate Tips

• Summer Crisp is more heat-tolerant than many lettuce types, but it is not heat-proof.
• Use 30–40% shade cloth during warm periods.
• Mulch lightly around plants to keep the root zone cool.
• Maintain consistent soil moisture.
• Good air circulation helps reduce fungal diseases.
• Monitor for aphids, whiteflies, thrips, caterpillars, and slugs/snails.
• If a tall central flower stalk develops, the plant is bolting; harvest promptly.
