How to Seed Sweet Pea Dwarf – Navy Blue (Lathyrus odoratus)
-
Sowing Time:
Sow indoors from January to April, or directly outdoors in autumn (September–October) or spring (March–April) when the soil can be worked. Early sowing produces stronger plants and earlier flowering. -
Seed Preparation:
Sweet pea seeds have a hard coat. To improve germination, soak them in warm water for 12–24 hours before sowing, or gently nick the seed coat with a nail file. -
Sowing Depth:
Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep in moist, well-drained soil or seed compost. -
Soil:
Use rich, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Sweet peas prefer neutral to slightly alkaline soil. -
Light & Temperature:
Keep seeds in a bright, cool spot at around 15–18 °C (59–65 °F). Avoid excessive heat, as it can hinder germination. -
Germination Time:
Seeds germinate in 10–21 days under optimal conditions. -
Transplanting:
When seedlings are about 8–10 cm tall, harden them off gradually and transplant outdoors, spacing 20 cm apart.
As this is a dwarf variety, it grows compactly and usually does not need support. -
Growing Tips:
-
Choose a sunny location for best flowering.
-
Water regularly, keeping the soil evenly moist but not soggy.
-
Remove faded flowers to encourage continuous blooms.
-
The Dwarf Navy Blue variety produces compact plants with richly scented, deep blue flowers, ideal for borders, pots, and small gardens.
