How to Seed Sweet Pea Perfume “Promise” (Lathyrus odoratus)
-
Sowing Time:
Sow indoors from January to April, or directly outdoors in autumn (September–October) or early spring once the soil is workable. Early sowing produces stronger plants and earlier blooms. -
Seed Preparation:
Sweet pea seeds have a hard coat. To improve germination, soak seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours before sowing, or gently nick the seed coat with a nail file. -
Sowing Depth:
Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep in moist, well-drained seed compost or garden soil. -
Soil:
Use rich, fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost. Sweet peas prefer neutral to slightly alkaline soil. -
Light & Temperature:
Keep the tray in a bright, cool location with temperatures between 15–18 °C (59–65 °F). Avoid excessive heat, which may slow germination. -
Germination Time:
Seeds germinate in 10–21 days, depending on temperature and moisture. -
Transplanting:
When seedlings reach about 8–10 cm tall, harden them off gradually and transplant outdoors, spacing 20–25 cm apart, near a trellis, net, or fence for climbing support. -
Growing Tips:
-
Choose a sunny, well-ventilated spot for best flowering.
-
Water regularly but avoid waterlogging.
-
Provide support for climbing — bamboo sticks, netting, or garden mesh work well.
-
Remove faded flowers to encourage continuous blooming.
-
The Perfume “Promise” variety is prized for its exceptional fragrance and soft pastel blooms, ideal for cut flowers and garden borders.
