How to Seed Sweet Pea “Philip Miller Red” (Lathyrus odoratus)
-
Sowing Time:
Sow indoors from January to April, or directly outdoors in autumn (September–October) or early spring once the soil can be worked. Early sowing produces stronger plants and earlier blooms. -
Seed Preparation:
Sweet pea seeds have a hard outer shell. To improve germination, soak the seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours before sowing, or gently nick the seed coat with a nail file. -
Sowing Depth:
Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep in moist, well-drained seed compost or garden soil. -
Soil:
Use rich, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Sweet peas prefer neutral to slightly alkaline soil. -
Light & Temperature:
Keep in a cool, bright place with temperatures between 15–18 °C (59–65 °F). Avoid high heat, which can delay germination. -
Germination Time:
Seeds germinate in 10–21 days, depending on conditions. -
Transplanting:
When seedlings reach about 8–10 cm tall, harden them off gradually and transplant outdoors near a trellis, fence, or support, spacing 20–25 cm apart. -
Growing Tips:
-
Choose a sunny spot with good air circulation.
-
Water regularly, especially during dry periods, but avoid waterlogging.
-
Provide support for climbing — such as netting or bamboo sticks.
-
Remove faded blooms to encourage continuous flowering.
-
The “Philip Miller Red” variety produces deep red, highly fragrant flowers, perfect for cut arrangements and garden displays.
