How to Seed Sweet Pea ‘Prince of Orange’ (Lathyrus odoratus)
-
When to Sow: Sow indoors in late winter to early spring (January–March) or directly outdoors in spring once soil is workable. In mild climates, autumn sowing is also possible.
-
Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost, in a sunny, sheltered position.
-
Seed Preparation: Sweet pea seeds have a hard coat. For faster germination, soak overnight or gently nick the seed coat before sowing.
-
Sowing: Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep in pots, root trainers, or directly outdoors. Space plants 20–30 cm apart.
-
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist but avoid waterlogging.
-
Germination: Seeds sprout in 10–21 days at 15–20 °C.
-
Transplanting: If started indoors, harden off seedlings and transplant outdoors after frost has passed.
-
Care: Provide trellis, netting, or canes for climbing. Deadhead or cut flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming.
✨ Produces beautifully fragrant orange-apricot blooms, ideal for garden trellises, fences, and as long-lasting cut flowers.
