How to Seed Sweet Pea ‘Ripple’ Mixed (Lathyrus odoratus)
-
Sowing Time:
Sow indoors in late winter to early spring (January–April), or directly outdoors in autumn or spring once the soil can be worked. Early sowing gives stronger, earlier flowering plants. -
Seed Preparation:
Sweet pea seeds have a hard coat. For better germination, soak seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours before sowing, or gently nick the seed coat with a nail file. -
Sowing Depth:
Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep in moist, well-drained soil or seed compost. -
Soil:
Use rich, fertile soil with good drainage. Mix in compost or well-rotted manure before planting. -
Light & Temperature:
Keep in a cool, bright place with a temperature around 15–18 °C (59–65 °F). Avoid high heat, which can reduce germination. -
Germination Time:
Seeds will germinate in 10–21 days depending on temperature. -
Transplanting:
When seedlings are about 8–10 cm tall, harden them off gradually and then transplant outdoors, spacing 20–25 cm apart near a trellis, fence, or support. -
Growing Tips:
-
Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil.
-
Water regularly but avoid waterlogging.
-
Provide support for climbing — such as a net, pole, or fence.
-
Remove faded flowers to encourage continuous blooming and prevent seed formation.
-
Sweet peas reward you with fragrant, colorful blooms all summer long.
