How to Seed Sweet Pea ‘Ripple’ Mixed (Lathyrus odoratus)

  1. Sowing Time:
Sow indoors in late winter to early spring (January–April), or directly outdoors in autumn or spring once the soil can be worked. Early sowing gives stronger, earlier flowering plants.

  2. Seed Preparation:
Sweet pea seeds have a hard coat. For better germination, soak seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours before sowing, or gently nick the seed coat with a nail file.

  3. Sowing Depth:
Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep in moist, well-drained soil or seed compost.

  4. Soil:
Use rich, fertile soil with good drainage. Mix in compost or well-rotted manure before planting.

  5. Light & Temperature:
Keep in a cool, bright place with a temperature around 15–18 °C (59–65 °F). Avoid high heat, which can reduce germination.

  6. Germination Time:
Seeds will germinate in 10–21 days depending on temperature.

  7. Transplanting:
When seedlings are about 8–10 cm tall, harden them off gradually and then transplant outdoors, spacing 20–25 cm apart near a trellis, fence, or support.

  8. Growing Tips:

    • Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil.

    • Water regularly but avoid waterlogging.

    • Provide support for climbing — such as a net, pole, or fence.

    • Remove faded flowers to encourage continuous blooming and prevent seed formation.

    • Sweet peas reward you with fragrant, colorful blooms all summer long.
