Sweet White Onion is a mild-flavored onion that grows best during the cool season. In the Gulf region, it should be planted from autumn through winter for the highest-quality bulbs.

🌱 Best Growing Season in the Gulf

  • Sow seeds: September–November
  • Best outdoor growing period: October–March
  • Onions thrive in cool weather between 13–24°C.
  • Avoid sowing during the hot summer months.

🌿 Seed Starting

  1. Prepare loose, fertile, well-draining soil rich in organic matter.
  2. Sow seeds 6–12 mm (¼–½ inch) deep.
  3. Space seeds 2–3 cm apart in rows.
  4. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

⏱ Germination

  • Seeds usually germinate in 7–14 days.
  • Ideal soil temperature for germination is 18–24°C.

🌱 Thinning & Transplanting

  • When seedlings reach 10–15 cm tall, thin or transplant them.
  • Final spacing:
    • 10–15 cm between plants
    • 25–30 cm between rows
  • Handle seedlings carefully to avoid damaging the roots.

☀️ Growing Conditions

  • Sunlight: Full sun (6–8 hours daily)
  • Soil: Loose, fertile, well-drained soil with pH 6.0–7.0
  • Watering: Water regularly to keep soil evenly moist, especially during bulb formation.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced vegetable fertilizer every 3–4 weeks until bulbs begin to enlarge.

🧅 Harvest

  • Harvest when 50–80% of the tops naturally fall over and begin to dry.
  • Pull bulbs carefully and cure them in a shaded, well-ventilated area for 7–14 days before storage.
  • Sweet onions are best consumed fresh and generally do not store as long as storage onion varieties.

🌡 Gulf Climate Tips

  • Plant only during the cooler months.
  • Mulch around plants to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Avoid excessive nitrogen late in the season, as it encourages leaf growth instead of bulb development.
  • Reduce watering during the final week before harvest to improve bulb quality.
