200 Seeds
Tarragon is a fragrant herb that prefers mild temperatures, good drainage, and plenty of sunlight. In the Gulf, it is best grown during the cooler season because extreme summer heat can cause stress and poor growth.
🌱 Best Sowing Time
- Best sowing periods in the Gulf: October–March.
- Best period in Kuwait: November–February.
- Sow when temperatures are approximately 15–25°C.
- Avoid sowing during May–September, especially during extreme summer heat.
- For container growing, seeds can be started indoors or in a protected area during warmer periods.
🌿 How to Sow the Seeds
- Use a light, sandy or loamy, well-drained seed-starting mix.
- Tarragon seeds are very small, so do not bury them deeply.
- Sprinkle seeds on the surface and press them gently into the growing medium.
- Cover with only a very thin layer of fine soil or vermiculite, if necessary.
- Mist gently with water.
- Keep the medium slightly moist but never waterlogged.
- Place the seed tray in a bright location with gentle morning sunlight or bright indirect light.
- Once seedlings are well established and have several true leaves, transplant carefully.
- Space plants approximately 30–45 cm apart.
⏱ Germination
- Germination can take approximately 10–21 days under suitable conditions.
- Maintain consistent moisture while seeds are germinating.
- Because the seeds are tiny, avoid strong watering that can wash them away.
- Provide good airflow once seedlings emerge.
🌱 Growing & Care
- Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade.
- In the Gulf, provide morning sun and light afternoon shade during warmer periods.
- Soil: Light, fertile, loose, and very well drained.
- Tarragon prefers soil that does not remain constantly wet.
- Watering: Water moderately. Allow the upper layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings.
- During hot weather, water more frequently if necessary, but avoid overwatering.
- Fertilizing: Mix compost into the soil before planting. Use a mild balanced fertilizer during active growth if needed.
- Avoid excessive fertilizer, which can reduce the concentration of aromatic oils.
🌿 Harvesting
- Begin harvesting once plants are well established and have sufficient leafy growth.
- Cut young stems and leaves as needed.
- Harvest preferably in the morning for good aroma and freshness.
- Regular light harvesting encourages branching.
- Avoid removing more than approximately one-third of the plant at one time.
🌸 Maintenance
- Pinch growing tips to encourage a bushier plant.
- Remove weak or damaged stems.
- Cut the plant back after the main growing period to encourage fresh growth.
- Tarragon can become dormant or slow-growing during periods of extreme heat.
- Replace plants if they become weak or unproductive after several seasons.
🌡 Gulf Climate Tips
- Tarragon is best treated as a cool-season herb in the Gulf.
- In Kuwait, November–February is particularly suitable for establishing plants.
- During warmer months, provide approximately 30–50% afternoon shade.
- Use a well-drained container if your garden soil is heavy or poorly drained.
- Water preferably in the early morning.
- Protect young seedlings from hot, dry winds.
- A light organic mulch can help protect the root zone, but do not keep the soil excessively wet.
- Container-grown plants can be moved to a cooler, partially shaded location during extreme summer temperatures.
