Tatsoi is a cool-season leafy vegetable that performs very well in the Gulf during autumn, winter, and early spring. It grows quickly and tolerates light cold, but high Gulf temperatures can cause bolting and bitter or tougher leaves.

🌱 Best Sowing Time

  • Best sowing period in the Gulf: September–March.
  • Best period in Kuwait: October–February.
  • For continuous harvest, sow a new batch every 2–3 weeks during the cool season.
  • Avoid sowing during May–August, especially during extreme summer heat.
  • Ideal germination temperature: approximately 10–20°C.

🌿 How to Sow the Seeds

  1. Prepare a fertile, loose, moisture-retentive and well-drained soil.
  2. Sow seeds approximately 0.5–1 cm deep.
  3. Cover lightly with fine soil.
  4. Water gently with a fine spray.
  5. Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  6. Place seed trays in a bright location with good light.
  7. Once seedlings develop 2–3 true leaves, thin or transplant them.
  8. Space plants approximately 15–20 cm apart for mature rosettes.
  9. For baby-leaf production, plants can be grown closer together.

⏱ Germination

  • Germination generally occurs within 3–7 days under suitable conditions.
  • Keep the seedbed evenly moist until seedlings emerge.
  • Avoid deep planting.
  • Provide good ventilation to reduce fungal problems.

🌱 Growing & Care

  • Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade.
  • In the Gulf, morning sun with afternoon shade is recommended.
  • Soil: Fertile, rich in organic matter, loose, and well drained.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during warmer weather.
  • Avoid drought stress, which can cause tougher and more strongly flavored leaves.
  • Avoid standing water.
  • Fertilizing: Add compost before sowing. Use a mild balanced fertilizer during active growth if necessary.
  • Tatsoi is a leafy crop, so adequate nitrogen supports good leaf development, but avoid excessive fertilization.

🥬 Harvesting

  • Baby leaves: approximately 20–25 days after sowing.
  • Mature plants: approximately 35–50 days, depending on conditions.
  • Harvest individual outer leaves for a continuous supply.
  • Alternatively, harvest the entire rosette near soil level.
  • Harvest in the early morning for crisp, fresh leaves.
  • Regular harvesting encourages continued production.

🌸 Preventing Early Bolting

  • High temperatures and increasing day length can encourage flowering.
  • Provide afternoon shade as temperatures rise.
  • Maintain consistent soil moisture.
  • Harvest regularly.
  • Make successive sowings every 2–3 weeks during the suitable season.
  • Once the plant bolts, leaves may become tougher and more bitter.

🌡 Gulf Climate Tips

  • Tatsoi is particularly suitable for Kuwait's autumn and winter season.
  • During warmer periods, use 30–50% afternoon shade.
  • In very warm weather, containers can be moved to a cooler location with morning sun.
  • Water preferably in the early morning.
  • A thin layer of organic mulch can help retain moisture and keep the root zone cooler.
  • Good airflow is important, especially in humid coastal areas.
  • For the best flavor and tenderness, harvest before plants experience prolonged heat.

Tip: For a continuous supply of Tatsoi in Kuwait, sow small batches every 2–3 weeks from October through February.
