100 Seeds
Thai Basil is a warm-season aromatic herb with a distinctive sweet, spicy, anise-like fragrance. It performs well in warm conditions, but in the Gulf it needs protection from extreme summer heat, particularly during the hottest afternoon hours.
🌱 Best Growing Season
- Best sowing time: September–November and February–April.
- In very hot Gulf areas, October–March is generally the easiest outdoor growing period.
- Avoid starting young seedlings during the peak summer heat.
- Ideal germination temperature: 20–30°C.
🌿 Seed Sowing
- Choose a location with full sun to light afternoon shade and well-drained soil.
- Sow seeds in seed trays, small pots, or directly into the garden.
- Sow seeds approximately 0.3–0.5 cm deep.
- Cover lightly with fine soil; do not bury deeply.
- Space plants approximately 20–30 cm apart after thinning.
- Keep approximately 30–45 cm between rows.
- Water gently using a fine spray to avoid disturbing the seeds.
- Keep the soil evenly moist until germination.
⏱ Germination
- Seeds usually germinate within 5–10 days under suitable conditions.
- Keep the seed-starting medium warm and consistently moist.
- Once seedlings emerge, provide bright light and gradually expose them to stronger sunlight.
🌱 Growing & Care
- Sunlight: Around 6–8 hours daily. In extreme Gulf heat, provide light afternoon shade.
- Soil: Fertile, loose, organic-rich, and well-drained.
- Watering: Water regularly when the top layer of soil begins to dry. Avoid both severe dryness and waterlogging.
- Fertilizing: Add compost before planting. Apply a mild balanced fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during active growth if needed.
- Pinching: Pinch the growing tips once plants are established to encourage bushier growth.
- Remove flower buds regularly if your goal is maximum leaf production.
- Good airflow helps reduce fungal problems.
🌿 Harvest
- Begin harvesting when plants are well established and have several sets of leaves.
- Pick young leaves and tender stems regularly.
- Harvest in the morning for the best aroma.
- Frequent harvesting encourages branching and continued leaf production.
- If you want seeds, allow some flower spikes to mature and dry before collecting them.
🌡 Gulf Climate Tips
- Thai Basil enjoys warmth but can suffer when exposed to extreme Gulf heat above approximately 35°C, especially with dry winds.
- Provide afternoon shade during very hot periods.
- Use mulch to keep the root zone cooler and reduce evaporation.
- Drip irrigation is recommended for efficient watering.
- Water early in the morning.
- Protect young plants from hot, dry winds.
- In peak summer, growing Thai Basil in a container with morning sun and afternoon shade can be easier than full outdoor exposure.
