Thyme is a hardy, aromatic Mediterranean herb that prefers sunny, dry conditions and well-drained soil. It can perform very well in the Gulf when planted during the cooler months and protected from extreme summer heat while young.

🌱 Best Growing Season

• Best sowing time: October–December.
• A second sowing can be made during January–February in milder Gulf areas.
• Avoid: Peak summer, especially June–August.
• Ideal germination temperature: 18–24°C.

🌿 Seed Sowing

1. Choose a sunny location with very well-drained soil.
2. Sow seeds in seed trays, small pots, or directly into the garden.
3. Scatter the tiny seeds on the surface of the soil.
4. Press them gently into the soil or cover with only a very thin layer of fine soil.
5. Do not bury thyme seeds deeply.
6. Once established, space plants approximately 20–30 cm apart.
7. Mist or water gently to avoid disturbing the seeds.
8. Keep the soil lightly moist until germination.

⏱ Germination

• Seeds generally germinate within 14–21 days, although some may take longer.
• Keep the seed-starting medium lightly moist rather than wet.
• Provide good light and ventilation once seedlings emerge.

🌱 Growing & Care

• Sunlight: Full sun, ideally 6–8 hours daily.
• Soil: Light, sandy or loamy, and very well drained. Adding coarse sand or other drainage material can help in heavy soils.
• Watering: Water moderately during establishment. Once established, thyme is relatively drought tolerant.
• Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
• Fertilizing: Mix a small amount of compost into the soil before planting. Thyme generally does not require heavy fertilization.
• Avoid excessive nitrogen because it can produce soft, leafy growth with weaker aroma.
• Good airflow is important, particularly in humid coastal Gulf areas.

🌿 Harvest

• Begin harvesting once plants are well established and have sufficient leafy growth.
• Cut the young stems and leaves as needed.
• Harvest preferably in the morning after the dew has dried.
• Avoid cutting more than about one-third of the plant at a time.
• Regular light pruning encourages bushier growth and helps prevent the plant from becoming woody.

🌡 Gulf Climate Tips

• The cooler autumn and winter months are the easiest period for establishing thyme from seed.
• In Kuwait and other very hot Gulf areas, November–January is particularly suitable.
• Provide afternoon shade during periods of extreme heat.
• Use a light gravel or mulch layer around established plants to improve drainage and reduce soil splash.
• Drip irrigation is recommended, but avoid frequent excessive watering.
• Protect young seedlings from hot, dry winds.
• In humid coastal areas, prioritize airflow and excellent drainage to reduce fungal problems.
