How to Seed Toadflax – Baby Snapdragon ‘Spanish Dancer’ (Linaria reticulata ‘Cordoba’)

  1. Best Time to Sow (Gulf Region):

    • Outdoors: From October to February, when temperatures range between 15–25°C (59–77°F).

    • Indoors or nursery trays: From December to February for early transplanting.

    • Avoid sowing from April to September, as Gulf summer heat prevents proper germination.

  2. Sowing Depth:
Sow seeds on the soil surfacedo not cover, as Linaria seeds need light to germinate.
Press gently into the soil and mist lightly to keep the surface moist.

  3. Soil:
Prefers light, well-drained, sandy or loamy soil enriched with organic matter.
    Ideal Gulf mix: 40% garden soil + 30% peat moss + 20% perlite + 10% compost.
    Avoid heavy or waterlogged soil.

  4. Light & Temperature:

    • Germination temperature: 18–22°C (64–72°F).

    • Requires bright light or full morning sun for healthy growth.

    • In the Gulf, provide morning sunlight and partial shade in the afternoon to prevent heat stress.

  5. Germination Time:
Seeds germinate in 10–20 days under warm, moist conditions.

  6. Transplanting:

    • When seedlings are 5–8 cm tall, transplant carefully into garden beds or pots.

    • Space plants 15–20 cm apart for compact and colorful coverage.

    • Harden seedlings gradually before full exposure to the sun.

  7. Growing Tips for Gulf Climate:

    • Sunlight: Prefers full morning sun with light afternoon shade.

    • Watering: Water regularly but lightly to keep soil moist — avoid overwatering.

    • Feeding: Apply a balanced fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during the growing period.

    • Maintenance: Remove faded flowers to encourage continuous blooming.

    • The ‘Spanish Dancer’ variety produces vibrant orange, yellow, and purple blooms resembling miniature snapdragons — perfect for borders, flower beds, and pots.

    • Blooms from late winter through early summer in Gulf conditions.
