Toma Verde is an early-maturing, open-pollinated tomatillo variety that produces abundant green fruits enclosed in papery husks. The fruits have the characteristic tangy flavor associated with tomatillos and are especially popular for salsa verde, sauces, Mexican dishes and fresh preparations. The plants are vigorous, bushy and can reach around 90–150 cm or more, so support is useful.

Tomatillos are self-incompatible, meaning that they generally need pollen from another tomatillo plant to set fruit well. Grow at least two plants for reliable fruit production.

Toma Verde prefers warm conditions but should be protected from the extreme heat of the Gulf summer.

• Avoid establishing young plants outdoors during the hottest summer period.

🌿 How to Plant the Seeds

1. Use a fine, fertile and well-draining seed-starting mix.
2. Moisten the mix before sowing.
3. Sow the seeds approximately 0.5–0.7 cm deep.
4. Place the seeds in individual cells or small pots where possible.
5. Cover lightly with fine soil.
6. Keep the growing medium evenly moist, but not waterlogged.
7. Place the seed tray in a warm location with bright light.
8. After seedlings emerge, provide strong light to prevent weak, elongated growth.

Good insect activity around flowering is beneficial because tomatillos require cross-pollination.
